SUMMARY:Music Engagement Program Workshop with Susan West
DESCRIPTION:The Music Engagement Program (MEP) focuses primarily on shared\, social music-making as a means of promoting well-being\, encouraging participation and developing musical skills and knowledge. The MEP is based on a social philosophy of shared\, active music making through singing known as The Music Outreach Principle where groups within schools and the wider community share their music with others\, encouraging on-going participation. It promotes\, but does not demand\, high-level skills\, and does not require expensive instruments or equipment to be effective. \nThis session involves:\n– The practice and theory of the Music Engagement Program\n– Discussion ideas and multi-media examples\n– Singing Applying the principles of ‘outreach’\n– Ideas for extending music learning through the approach. \nTime: Monday October 16\, 4-5.30pm\nPlace: SIT Downtown\, 25 Don St\, Invercargill\nCost: $30 non-MENZA members\, $25 MENZA members \nThis course will be run by Associate Prof Susan West\, Music Engagement Program\, Australian National University.\nTo register or for further information email sally.bodkin-allen@sit.ac.nz or southlandmusiced@gmail.com \nAbout Susan West\nAssociate Professor Susan West is the Artistic Director of the Music Engagement Program at the Australian National University in Canberra. Susan developed the innovative approach to music education. Assoc. Prof. West’s work has attracted both national and international interest. She has been recognized through various awards\, including a National Children’s Week Award\, an International Women’s Day Award and a citation for Teaching Excellence from the Carrick Institute. Most recently the Music Engagement Program was recognized for its excellence as a community outreach program through a national awards program run by the Music Council of Australia\, as well as an Australian Volunteers Award.

He is the author of the Standard of Excellence Comprehensive Band Method\, widely regarded as the most important contribution to the band music field in the last three decades\, as well as his first contribution\, Best In Class. His new contribution\, co-authored with Ryan Nowlin\, the Tradition of Excellence Comprehensive Band Method\, is a performance-centered curriculum that seamlessly blends time-tested and innovative pedagogy with cutting-edge technology. He also co-authored\, with Dean Sorenson\, the Standard of Excellence Jazz Ensemble Method and the Standard of Excellence Advanced Jazz Ensemble Method. \nIn addition to his method books\, Dr. Pearson is well-known as a composer of many frequently-performed compositions for concert band and jazz ensemble. He has led clinics in all fifty of the United States and has been guest conductor and clinician\, by invitation\, in countries throughout the Pacific Rim\, the Orient\, Europe\, and the Canadian provinces. \nRaised in Bloomington\, Minnesota\, Bruce Pearson has taught at the elementary\, junior high\, high school\, and college levels for over 40 years. In December of 1998\, Dr. Pearson was awarded the prestigious Midwest Clinic Medal of Honor in recognition of his outstanding contributions to music education. In 2007\, he was the recipient of the Distinguished Alumni Award at St. Cloud State University. Also in 2007\, he was recognized as the first Patron for the Maryborough Conference in Queensland\, Australia. Dr. Pearson was selected as a 2017 recipient of University of Northern Colorado’s Honored Alumni Award. Additionally\, the American School Band Directors Association conferred on Dr. Pearson the 2014 Edwin Franko Goldman Award “as a symbol of high esteem and respect for outstanding personal contributions to the school band movement.” He continues to serve as a guest lecturer\, clinician\, and conductor in addition to his work as a composer\, arranger\, and author.
