Types of repetition\, chunking\, and slow practice are essential. What is required is not just that students engage in proper practice strategies\, but that they know what they are\, and are consciously aware of using them. How is this taught explicitly\, and how can we be certain that students really understand practice? \nSession B: (11.30 am – 1.15 pm)\nMusical Potential? How Growth Mind-set and Expectation Determine Outcomes\nMind-set is the most important precept in music education today. It is so important that every music teacher understands the impact that their beliefs\, words and actions have on cultivating the learning disposition of students. Learners with a growth mind-set work harder\, embrace challenge\, persist for longer and learn from criticism\, whereas the fixed mind-set learner gives up more readily and ultimately achieves less. Teacher mind-sets result in teacher expectations impacting student achievement. \nSession C: (2.00 pm – 3.30 pm)\nThe Metacognitive Music Teacher\nMetacognition is that wonderful learning stage when the learner drives the learning. It means “thinking about our thinking”. Metacognitive teaching has the greatest impact on learning. How is this maximised in piano lessons? Supported by the work of John Hattie and Gary McPherson\, and specifically for piano teachers\, Michael will introduce a tripartite model for fostering metacognition. \nSession Fees:\nCat. Ed Studies\, B.Ed. A. Mus. A) is an educator\, speaker\, author\, choral conductor and pianist. \nGriffin’s talks to staff\, students and parents\, invite examination of the factors that impact continuous improvement toward exceptional achievement. Whilst a learning (growth) mindset provides the autonomous volition to embark upon this journey\, the greatest influence of progress – music and otherwise – is the quality and the quantity of effort\, or in musical terminology – practice time. Indeed\, Griffin’s book Learning Strategies for Musical Success investigates these concepts in detail providing pragmatic solutions for music teachers. Developing Musical Skill provides the same for students. Griffin also presents to full staffs and student bodies on teacher mindsets\, metacognition\, and fostering intrinsic motivation. He has spoken to groups of staff\, students\, parents\, corporate and community audiences in about 350 settings in 30 countries throughout the world. Many schools such as Eton College (UK)\, United World College\, South East Asia (Singapore)\, The International School of Zurich (Switzerland)\, and Geelong Grammar School (Australia) are considered world leaders in education. \nGriffin has been the Keynote or Consultant Speaker at several global education events including the Association for Music in International Schools (AMIS\, Dubai) European Council for International Schools (Hamburg and Nice)\, Association of International Schools Africa Educators’ Conference (South Africa)\, English Schools’ Foundation (Hong Kong)\, International Educators Conference (Brunei)\, APEP Member Schools Conference (Thailand)\, British Schools of the Middle East Arts Conference (Dubai and Oman)\, Qatar Music Academy (Doha)\, Spring Cantus Salisburgensis Festival (Austria)\, Association Genevoise des Ecoles Privées (Switzerland)\, Maryborough Music Conference (QLD\, Australia) and numerous music hubs and societies throughout the UK and Australia. He has been an invited guest at the New Horizons adult education program in Rochester NY\, and has consulted for Cambridge University Press on a project to redesign music education curriculum for Kazakhstan. \nAs a conductor\, Griffin’s choral ensembles have received more than 40 prizes and awards (half of these first prizes) in Australian competitions including one of Australia’s major choral prizes\, the Australasian Open Choral Championship. Griffin has adjudicated at several eisteddfods and been guest conductor for major events including the Pemulwuy National Male Voice Festival\, and events in Switzerland\, Asia\, the United Kingdom and New Zealand. Earlier leadership experiences in SA included stints as Musical Director for Pirates of Penzance (G&S Society\, Adelaide)\, Catholic Schools Music Festival\, Adelaide Boys Choir\, and the Brighton School Choirs – at that time considered among the best school choirs in Australia. Griffin is a recipient of the South Australian Education and Arts Ministers’ Prize\, and is listed in the inaugural Who’s Who South Australia for services to music education. \nAs well as the widely acclaimed Learning Strategies for Musical Success\, Griffin is the author of other music education books including Bumblebee! Rounds & Warm-up for Choirs\, and Modern Harmony Method. As a pianist\, Griffin has held guest residencies at Dubai’s Burj al Arab and repeat invitations to Australia’s world-class resort\, Hayman Island. Classical piano recordings include the compilations Consolation (2013) and Shimmer (2014). As a teacher in schools\, Griffin held a range of posts up to Deputy Head level. \n  \n  \n
