DESCRIPTION:Sector: Primary / Intermediate\nWhere: Te Kura Kaupapa Māori of Te Wānaga Whare Tapere o Takitimu\, Heretaunga\nCost: Free for kura and schools with a MENZA membership\, first year teachers and those currently enrolled in an education degree\, or $30 plus GST for non-members.\nRegister here today. \nPapamahi Puoro mā ngā kaiako Māori \nMusic and dance hold great potential for learning\, expression and empowerment for our tamariki\, but often kaiako feel they don’t have the skills\, methods or time to teach these subjects.  \nAs music specialist kaiako at Te Ara Whānui Kura Kaupapa Māori o ngā Kōhanga Reo o Te Awakairangi I have experienced wonderful success in creating avenues for our ākonga to express themselves through music and dance\, resulting in powerful learning and personal growth. Hauora is a key component of this mahi\, as students learn how to manage their oranga hinengaro\, wairua & whānau to explore and sustain their creativity. \nI am passionate about sharing these teaching approaches with other kaiako so that more of our tamariki can access the benefits of child-centred music education\, and I am organising PD workshops for kaiako in 2019. These are open to any kaiako who are interested in bringing more music and movement into their classroom\, regardless of prior knowledge. They are hands-on\, interactive papamahi delivered in te reo where kaiako can: \n\nPick up some new practical activities for exploring music in the classroom\nExperience ways to incorporate creative dance into a kaupapa\nUse the power of language to create waiata relating to various topics\nCreate your own musical conversation using percussion instruments\n\nFor more about this work please check out the short video featured in this UNICEF article about our kura\, and take a leisurely stroll through the Te Ara Whānui sound garden blog\, where you can see the taonga I created for my students (painted and decorated by them)\, and footage of them performing their own musical creations (eg Y5 kōtiro waiata & pao ā ringa). Fun\, practical session. \nClare McCormack is a music educator on the North Shore of Auckland teaching at Mairangi Bay School and in the community. She writes resources for teachers\, including a resource ‘Behind Bars’ for Marimba. Clare is an experienced workshop facilitator having run workshops in Australia and New Zealand. Her main influences are the Orff Schulwerk and Kodaly methods of teaching. \n

SUMMARY:Retrieving music classes from the jaws of NCEA: sharing ideas on curriculum design with Dr Graham McPhail
DESCRIPTION:Sector: Secondary\nWhere: Faculty of Education and Social Work\, Epsom Campus\, 74 Epsom Ave\, Epsom\, Auckland.\nCost:Free for MENZA members\, first year teachers and those currently enrolled in an education degree\, or $30 for non-members.\nRegister here today \n  \nThis workshop will introduce the key concepts of a curriculum design model currently being trialled in a number of New Zealand schools. The aim of the workshop is to engage with the high level of teacher autonomy available in New Zealand by encouraging renewed thinking about curriculum design in its broadest sense rather than in relation to assessment\, which has tended to dominate teacher thinking and practice over the last decade or so. The Curriculum Design Coherence (CDC) model currently being trialled in the Knowledge Rich School Project run out of the University of Auckland is one that has been theoretically critiqued in the academic literature and is currently being trailed and critiqued by teachers in five New Zealand schools (three secondary\, one primary\, and one Kura). Teacher capability in relation to thinking about curriculum design is very likely to be enhanced by coming into contact with these ideas. \n  \nDr Graham McPhail is Senior Lecturer in Music Education in the School of Curriculum and Pedagogy at the Faculty of Education. He taught secondary school music for 21 years and for three years was the national moderator for NCEA music working for NZQA. His research interests include the place of knowledge in curriculum development\, 21st century education\, and pedagogy in one-to-one music tuition.  Graham is a past President of the New Zealand Suzuki Institute (NZSI)\, a member of the baroque ensemble Extempore\, and artistic co-director of New Zealand’s original instrument orchestra NZ Barok. He also teaches baroque violin in the School of Music and is one of New Zealand’s leading figures in the critical approach to performance of 17th and 18th century European art music. \n
