SUMMARY:Otaki – MENZA Networks of Expertise Event (Secondary+ITM)
DESCRIPTION:Thursday 19th March\nOtaki College\, 233 Mill Road\, Otaki 5512\nFull Day (with the option to only attend the morning or afternoon session but both are strongly recommended) \nREGISTER HERE\nNote\, that this day will be tailored to the needs of the attendees\, and you are encouraged to bring your questions along with your charged laptops.\nSession 1 9am-12pm.\n9am Introduction\, questions\, outline and connections \n9:30-11:30am BYOD recording for any student.\nThis workshop will guide teachers through a BYOD friendly recording setup suitable for teachers and their students. Using online and free resources in conjunction with quality audio hardware\, this workshop will be hands-on and based in the context of your school. Links to NCEA and Production Technology Unit standards will be included. By the end of this workshop\, participants will have recorded a song from scratch multiple times and in doing so increase their confidence\, knowledge and ability. It is a goal of Martin’s\, that teachers would be able to record their own students the following day.\n11:30-12pm Answering Questions\n12-12:45 lunch break \nSession 2 12:45-3:45pm\n12:45-2:45pm What do you do with electronic students?\nThis workshop looks at the skills laptop music performers and composers need. It includes an overview of different styles and a demonstration of the tools used to compose and perform\, including for SFRQ/Tangata beats. It covers what you could offer to your students and what decisions you might need to make. This workshop will include a thorough demonstration of software to help train modern electronic musicians in keyboard\, pad-drumming and electronic drumming. An introduction to Ableton Live will be included\, with considerable time given to hands-on opportunity for attendees to use the different controllers and software demonstrated. \nThe final section will cover updates to NCEA and how to plan for them over the next few years. It will also include a short evaluation and personal reflection. \nMartin Emo has run workshops for Music Technology throughout Aotearoa / New Zealand/Australia and online for MENZA\, the Ministry of Education\, NZQA and through his educational consultancy. He holds a Masters in Education based on effective professional development for Music teachers in using Music Technology. Martin is currently the Musicnet Facilitator for NZ and a Full-time PhD candidate. DESCRIPTION:Project based learning using easy to play musical instruments to support well-being\, belonging\, communication\, contribution and exploration.\nThis workshop is supported by the MENZA Networks of Expertise.\nREGISTER HERE\n\nWhen: March 19 from 1:30 – 4:00 PM \nWhere: Christchurch School of Music \nWith “Arts Based Learning” teachers will be able to create their own project based learning models that will promote independent and creative approaches\, differentiated learning\, positive behaviour\, and teamwork \nActive\, kinesthetic learning\, proven successful for children with special needs as well as supporting the well-being and achievement of ESOL and students at low decile schools. Teachers love what they learn from “Arts Based Learning” because it is fun to use and allows them to return to teaching as an art. \nAbout Beth Cohen Music\nBeth Cohen’s company\, Cohen Arts & Education has provided professional development workshops\, classroom support and educational consulting to public\, private and charter schools since 1998\, including New York City Schools and Canterbury Schools (since 2011). Beth is a NZ registered teacher and a doctoral candidate at the University of Canterbury where she is studying how Leonard Bernstein’s Young People’s Concerts inspired students and teachers alike Since immigrating to New Zealand in 2011 Beth has worked as a teacher\, conductor\, adjudicator and professional development provider through Beth Cohen Music & Education. \nREGISTER HERE
