SUMMARY:Safer Spaces in Music Education workshop - Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland
DESCRIPTION:MENZA is thrilled to be partnering with Safer Spaces in Music Education (SSME) to present this very important workshop. It is made possible by funding from the Networks of Expertise\, and the workshops are $30 and include a resource and digital PD certificate for evidence of professional growth. Morning tea\, lunch\, and tea and coffee will be provided.\n \nThe ‘Professional Respect’ Workshop is a bespoke training designed to support Worksafe’s Health&Safety guidelines to prevent sexual harassment in the workplace. The Professional Respect training day has been developed in conjunction with SoundCheck Aotearoa and are based on a similar training that has been rolled\nout across the screen sector. \n\nThe full-day training is friendly and interactive and the content includes:\n* Definitions of sexual harassment and sexual harm within New Zealand legislation\n* WorkSafe obligations and legal requirements for workplaces\n* Guidance for receiving disclosures of sexual harm and supporting survivors\n* Options and pathways for reporting sexual harm and support services available\n* Strategies for preventing sexual harm and fostering a respectful work environment\n* Practical tips for bystander intervention. \n\nThe day starts at 8.30 for tea and coffee\, with an opening karakia at 9am sharp\, and runs through until 5pm. Breaks and refreshments/lunch will be provided. The training days are facilitated by sexual harm prevention and response specialists Rachel Harrison and Mel Calvesbert\, who are experienced practitioners in sexual harm prevention and response and they will ensure that the discussion is safe\, constructive and\nrespectful. There will be no requirement to share personal information in the workshop. DESCRIPTION:MENZA is thrilled to be partnering with Horomona Horo and Tāmihana Kātene to provide wānanga across Aotearoa\, supporting kaiāko with their confidence and understanding of mātauranga Māori as it pertains to music. This is made possible by funding from the Networks of Expertise to support preparation for the new NCEA\, and the workshops are free for all teachers. You don’t need to be a MENZA member\, but of course we appreciate all new members too.\n\n\nHoro is an esteemed practitioner of Taonga Pūoro\, core member of the haumanu collective and a gifted teacher. This hui aims to help build your knowledge in mātauranga Māori and mātauranga pūoro. DESCRIPTION:Waiata Māori are for everyone to enjoy! Waiata Māori are a great way to learn te reo (the language)\, and to engage with te ao Māori (the Māori world view). As teachers living and working in Aotearoa\, we have the unique opportunity to tautoko the Māori community by promoting the use of waiata Māori within our respective classrooms. This hui will offer practical suggestions and recommended resources to help facilitate these objectives. In this Professional Development opportunity\, we will focus on how we can make music more inclusive and allow our classrooms to resonate towards Te Tiriti o Waitangi. \nWe will focus on making Taonga Puoro and how our student can create soundscape pieces in the morning\, and in the afternoon we will have a look at the Taonga Puoro Unit Standards and look at them as alternatives to the Achievement Standards in Music. SUMMARY:Popular Music and Semiotic Analysis - a Method for School Educators
DESCRIPTION:This workshop will provide an easy to understand and apply method to help educators think about popular music analysis.\n\n\nClassical and Jazz based analytical tools are not broad enough to explore popular music in a holistic manner\, which requires consideration of culture and subtext through para-musical elements (e.g. video\, image etc)\, as well as harmony\, melody\, rhythm\, form etc. Semiotic analysis is useful in the study of popular music as it looks at both the sociological and musicological features of any given musical text. I teach semiotic analysis to students enrolled in the Bachelor of Musical Arts degree at MAINZ as a means to understand song and songwriting\, and this workshop will be a practical way to look at popular music analysis taking into account denotative and connotative components. \nMark Baynes is a jazz pianist with a contemporary leaning. Mark’s doctoral research has provided an analytical lexicon that can be used to understand music in terms of what is defined as consonance and dissonance found in western music as a whole. Although informed by academia\, Mark is primarily a performer\, composer and accompanist residing in Auckland\, New Zealand. Mark is a presenter of 95bFM’s The Jazz Show\, and writes the X-Factory column for NZMusician Magazine.  \n Mark currently works as a Programme Manager and Senior Lecturer of the Bachelor of Musical Arts Degree at the Music and Audio Institute of New Zealand / Southern Institute of Technology.  \n\nCLICK HERE TO REGISTER

DESCRIPTION:REGISTER HERE FOR FACE TO FACE WORKSHOP\nIn this workshop for secondary school music teachers\, the elements of the Curriculum Design Coherence Model (CDC) will be used to design a unit of work. \nThe CDC model is currently being utilised in a research study in New Zealand and England and is proving very useful in enhancing teachers’ curriculum design knowledge. Teachers will work in groups to design a music topic using the model. The model directs teachers towards a deep understanding to a topic’s ‘epistemic’ structure and how this can be utilised to enable deep learning and appropriate assessment.

DESCRIPTION:Producing quality videos for online submissions\n\n\nAs a result of COVID19 many school competitions such as Rockquest and the Chamber Music NZ Competition are now inviting video submissions of school bands and ensembles. \n​While these competitions don’t require a top quality studio recording of your school groups\, wouldn’t it be nice to know how to get much better quality video and audio than just recording on someone’s phone or sticking up a handycam for the group to perform to? \n​In 2019 one of groups from St Andrew’s College won the national Bandquest competition with this video recorded in their music room. If you would like to make videos which sound and look like this\, then these workshops are for you. \n​Topics covered: \n\n\nEquipment required including what software to use\, what microphones to buy\, the best audio interfaces for a high school budget. \n\n\nHow to setup DAW templates for fast recording and mixing \n\n\nWhat is the best way to record experienced and inexperienced bands \n\n\nHow to mix quality recordings within the ‘rules’ set out by the Rockquest\, Bandquest and Chamber Music competitions \n\n\nWhat are the best software plugins to buy (including highlighting the latest trends in the mixing world that greatly simplify the mixing process). \n\n\nHow to use free video editing software to create multi-angle music videos \n\n\n​ \nDuncan Ferguson will be running two days of workshops in July (prior to the Rockquest submission date) where you can join in on the recording of his year 7-9 band “Black Wired” (featured in the video linked to above). On Saturday 4 July the day will be a hands-on session showing how to select and setup all the gear\, and run a recording session while videoing the performance. Sunday 5 July will be dedicated to mixing the performance and creating the final video. \n​The Christchurch workshops will be the best and most hands on days and teachers are encouraged to attend these first and foremost.  Please note\, while the main focus will be recording rock bands for Rockquest we will also be covering recording other ensembles such are Chamber Groups and Choirs. \n​However\, for those that are unable to travel to Christchurch Duncan will offer one-day versions of these workshops in Auckland and Hamilton on 13-14 October. Note\, there will be no ‘live’ recording session for the Auckland and Hamilton workshops\, but we will do our best to cover all the same material in one day\, including giving hands on lessons on how to do all the post-production mixing and video production work. \n​These days will be suitable for beginner and experienced teachers including primary and intermediate music specialists. DESCRIPTION:The Auckland Secondary School’s Music Festival Trust is excited to announce the KBB 2020 Band & Orchestra Showcase. We are offering our participating schools – and any other schools who would like to come on board – a chance to present some of their planned 2020 repertoire to a wider audience. Owing to the hugely decreased time for preparation and difficulties faced by different schools\, the performances will not be formally adjudicated. However\, this change in format also presents us with a unique opportunity – we would like to get to know you\, the staff and students of our KBBMF ensembles\, better than ever before. \nOur Facebook traffic suggests that one of the main reasons that young people come to our page is for links to past photography and videos. Using that as a starting point\, we’ve come up with a format for a KBB Music Festival YouTube channel which will showcase the work being done in schools\, to an audience both with the Auckland region and beyond. \nThe KBB 2020 Band & Orchestra Showcase invites participants to submit: \nApproximately 10 minutes of video footage of your band/orchestra performing some of their 2020 repertoire. The festival may be able to coordinate assistance for this process if needed. \nA three-minute\, behind-the-scenes video revealing the ‘unique character’ of your ensemble; the sort of thing that the audience at KBBMF never gets to see. \nThese videos will be compiled and uploaded to the newly create KBB Music Festival YouTube channel. \nWe would like entrants to register their intention to participate in the online festival by Wednesday July 1st\, to give us time to prepare. \nVideos would need to be uploaded to the KBB Music Festival Website by Friday 21st August to be eligible for awards. There is no competitive aspect to this year’s musical performances\, but our sponsors have offered to select their picks of the best/funniest/most effective behind-the-scenes videos and offer some fun prizes. \nIdeally groups would submit videos in both categories. We will perform some minimal processing on the footage to achieve some consistency by attaching identifying festival logos/title screens etc. Depending on the situation faced by your department\, you may find that it is only realistic to bring off one of these video projects\, not both.
