Participants in this course can achieve ONZA certification at Level 1. Level 2 is also being offered for those who have completed level 1. \nThe Orff approach is characterised by the integration of speech\, movement\, and music with a focus on improvisation. Because of its integrated nature\, it works effectively alongside curriculum areas and boosts inquiry learning and gives opportunity to develop creativity in both the teacher and student. \n\nLevel 1 and 2 courses 20-25th April\nVenue:  Auckland University\, Epsom Campus\, Auckland.\nCost:  Members: $600   Non-members: $640 Students: $400 (Early bird fees before April 2nd\n\nComments from participants\n“The course was incredibly fun\, hands-on\, and it really allowed for equal participation and collaboration. It was wonderful and let me learn to appreciate the beauty of collaboration and cultural diversity.” \n…” the Orff approach offers an alternative culture of learning\, where artistry is invited\, contributions are celebrated\, fun is had\, and students are intrinsically rewarded through supported achievement and musically enriching collaboration”. \nFunding and support in your school\nONZA (Orff New Zealand Aotearoa) has won funding by the Networks of Expertise to provide support to selected schools and early childhood centres to assist in the development of their music programmes. This comes in the form of a fully paid course to 1 or 2 teachers and assistance through mentoring by an experienced Orff educator or team\, in the development of their music programmes at their school. SUMMARY:Retrieving music classes from the jaws of NCEA: sharing ideas on curriculum design with Dr Graham McPhail
DESCRIPTION:Sector: Secondary\nWhere: Faculty of Education and Social Work\, Epsom Campus\, 74 Epsom Ave\, Epsom\, Auckland.\nCost:Free for MENZA members\, first year teachers and those currently enrolled in an education degree\, or $30 for non-members.\nRegister here today \n  \nThis workshop will introduce the key concepts of a curriculum design model currently being trialled in a number of New Zealand schools. The aim of the workshop is to engage with the high level of teacher autonomy available in New Zealand by encouraging renewed thinking about curriculum design in its broadest sense rather than in relation to assessment\, which has tended to dominate teacher thinking and practice over the last decade or so. The Curriculum Design Coherence (CDC) model currently being trialled in the Knowledge Rich School Project run out of the University of Auckland is one that has been theoretically critiqued in the academic literature and is currently being trailed and critiqued by teachers in five New Zealand schools (three secondary\, one primary\, and one Kura). Teacher capability in relation to thinking about curriculum design is very likely to be enhanced by coming into contact with these ideas. \n  \nDr Graham McPhail is Senior Lecturer in Music Education in the School of Curriculum and Pedagogy at the Faculty of Education. He taught secondary school music for 21 years and for three years was the national moderator for NCEA music working for NZQA. His research interests include the place of knowledge in curriculum development\, 21st century education\, and pedagogy in one-to-one music tuition.  Graham is a past President of the New Zealand Suzuki Institute (NZSI)\, a member of the baroque ensemble Extempore\, and artistic co-director of New Zealand’s original instrument orchestra NZ Barok. He also teaches baroque violin in the School of Music and is one of New Zealand’s leading figures in the critical approach to performance of 17th and 18th century European art music. \n

SUMMARY:Teachers' Professional Development Day in Auckland with Dr Robert McWilliams
DESCRIPTION:Friday May 17th \n10am – 4pm\nVenue: East Auckland – Please Contact education@musicworks.co.nz for the specific location. \nTopics include: \n“Strategies and materials for convincing stakeholders on the value of instrumental music learning”\nThis session will cover effective strategies and materials that are persuasive for students\, parents\, administrators\, etc. to support recruitment and retention in instrumental learning. Exciting new developments in research to support this will be shared and identified. \n“Choosing and preparing repertoire that will be rewarding for all – players\, conductors\, and audience” \nThis session will address choosing repertoire that provides the optimum means for developing musicianship and expressive playing. Suggested repertoire and reasons for inclusion will be covered. Effective methods for preparing and studying repertoire will also be addressed including how to study and mark scores to be ready for effective rehearsals. \n“Rehearsal strategies that build musicianship skills and develop your ensemble faster!”\nThis session will explore rehearsal strategies that are focused on getting the players’ ears more involved in the process so that they hear the issues needing to be addressed and can generate solutions that will transfer to other aspects of their playing. This approach develops musicianship significantly faster when applied consistently and results in more cohesive ensemble playing. \nPlease bring your instrument as at the latter part of the day for a short time\, Dr Mc Williams will run a basic “teacher ensemble” to discuss some of the concepts in preparation for the Saturday clinic. Using speech rhymes as the motivator we will explore singing\, moving\, and playing experiences that will engage young children. The main elements of music\, beat\, rhythm\, dynamics\, pitch\, tempo and tone colour will be experienced in simple ways that all teachers can enjoy with their students. \nJudith Bell – Taking the Stigma Away from Theory\nA fun\, interactive workshop where we get to try out the games and activities that make theory so popular at year 7-8 level as well as discussing the strategies and resources for running an after-school theory club. Although much of the workshop is “unplugged” the workshop also covers some engaging ways technology is used in the club. It will also look briefly at music learning and computational thinking and how they link into the new digital technologies curriculum. \nTim Randle – Songwriting\nThis will cover tips and strategies to help teach Songwriting and implement the new standard 91849. The workshop will cover lyric writing and song specific composition techniques. \nLinda Webb – Advocating for Prmary Music – A discussion workshop – FREE \nWe invite all interesed teachers to share their thoughts on how MENZA can best respond to the NMSSA report by contributing to our Primary Advocacy Statement at a group discussion.  \nIn her research paper\, “A Mismatch between Policy\, Philosophy and Practice” Linda Webb highlighted that changes in teacher education delivery over the previous decade had negatively impacted primary generalist teacher’s competence and confidence to teach music\, with the large majority not able to meet curriculum requirements and delivery expectations. \nLatest findings from the NMSSA has further proven the effect this is having on our children\, with only half of students at years 2 and 8 reaching the minimum scores associated with achieving curriculum at levels 2 and 4 respectively\, with low decile schools scoring\, on average\, lower than those attending high decile schools. Similarly\, Maori and Pasifika students\, who are more likely to attend mid-low decile schools\, scored on average lower than non-Maori and non-Pasifika students.
