SUMMARY:Strum Strike and Blow 2022
DESCRIPTION:About Strum Strike and Blow 2022 \nWednesday August 10th 2022 \nStrum\, Strike and Blow is an exciting amalgamation of the ChCh Marimba Festival and ChCh Uke Fest which will feature over 1000  students playing marimbas\, ukuleles.  The Festival is run by Music Education Canterbury and Christchurch Civic Music Council and is in its 8th year and has usually been held in the Christchurch Arena. \nOnce schools have registered they are given access to the music which will generally involve 4-5 individual pieces for ukuleles\, recorders and marimba and a couple of massed items for all three groups of instruments. \nThe music caters for all levels of experience and when performed live at the festival event\, is backed by a professional band. \nWe run workshops for teachers and have plenty of rehearsal material available. \nSchools rehearse together during the day between 9:30am and 2pm then perform together in a 75 minute family-friendly concert on August 10th 2022. from 7pm-8:15pm \nSchools can register for this festival through the registration page

SUMMARY:Writing Songs for Children - A workshop with Kath Bee
DESCRIPTION:So\, you want to write songs for your tamariki? Cool! The goal of this workshop is to write and perform a song to the group. Don’t worry about the nerves – it’s normal! We will do some exercises to get into the mindset of a child\, discuss what children like to hear in a song and why\, talk about different types of children’s songs\, the basics of song structure\, to rhyme or not to rhyme\, then brainstorm themes/topics and settle down to write. \nBring your instrument if you play\, but it’s not necessary – we will mostly focus on lyrics and touch briefly on melody/chords. I’ll attempt to answer your questions and play some of my songs for you as examples. Then we can sit back and listen to what unfolds! \nThis is a 2-hour workshop and the last 1/2 hour will be performances. \nPlease register by Friday 4 September using https://forms.gle/L97HSJEMdfYFmopD9 or by contacting Alison Caldwell at acaldwell@stclair.school.nz \nPlease note: participants will be required to adhere to Ministry of Health Guidelines for COVID Alert Level 2.

SUMMARY:Teacher Training in Music Technology MUSIC & VIDEO PRODUCTION Christchurch
DESCRIPTION:Producing quality videos for online submissions\n\n\nAs a result of COVID19 many school competitions such as Rockquest and the Chamber Music NZ Competition are now inviting video submissions of school bands and ensembles. \nWhile these competitions don’t require a top quality studio recording of your school groups\, wouldn’t it be nice to know how to get much better quality video and audio than just recording on someone’s phone or sticking up a handycam for the group to perform to? \nIn 2019 one of groups from St Andrew’s College won the national Bandquest competition with this video recorded in their music room. If you would like to make videos which sound and look like this\, then these workshops are for you. \nTopics covered: \n\n\nEquipment required including what software to use\, what microphones to buy\, the best audio interfaces for a high school budget. \n\n\nHow to setup DAW templates for fast recording and mixing \n\n\nWhat is the best way to record experienced and inexperienced bands \n\n\nHow to mix quality recordings within the ‘rules’ set out by the Rockquest\, Bandquest and Chamber Music competitions \n\n\nWhat are the best software plugins to buy (including highlighting the latest trends in the mixing world that greatly simplify the mixing process). \n\n\nHow to use free video editing software to create multi-angle music videos \n\n\n \nDuncan Ferguson will be running two days of workshops in July (prior to the Rockquest submission date) where you can join in on the recording of his year 7-9 band “Black Wired” (featured in the video linked to above). On Saturday 4 July the day will be a hands-on session showing how to select and setup all the gear\, and run a recording session while videoing the performance. Sunday 5 July will be dedicated to mixing the performance and creating the final video. \nThe Christchurch workshops will be the best and most hands on days and teachers are encouraged to attend these first and foremost.  Please note\, while the main focus will be recording rock bands for Rockquest we will also be covering recording other ensembles such are Chamber Groups and Choirs. \nHowever\, for those that are unable to travel to Christchurch Duncan will offer one-day versions of these workshops in Auckland and Hamilton on 13-14 October. Note\, there will be no ‘live’ recording session for the Auckland and Hamilton workshops\, but we will do our best to cover all the same material in one day\, including giving hands on lessons on how to do all the post-production mixing and video production work. \nThese days will be suitable for beginner and experienced teachers including primary and intermediate music specialists. For those that haven’t done any recording of music before Duncan will send out some guidelines for what you need to know to prepare for these workshops so you can get the most out of them. \n\n\n\n\n\nVENUES AND DATES\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCHRISTCHURCH\n\n\nSaturday 4 July \nSt Andrew’s College \nRecording and videoing \n\nCHRISTCHURCH\n\n\nSunday 5 July \nSt Andrew’s College \nMixing & Post Production \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAUCKLAND\n\n\nTuesday 13 October \nVenue TBC \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHAMILTON\n\n\nWednesday 14 October \nVenue TBC \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n$159 + GST per day for Auckland and Hamilton.\n$270 + GST for both Christchurch workshops (or you can attend just one of the days in Christchurch for $149 + GST)\nAll workshops run from 9.30am–2.45pm.\nPayment is due on receipt of invoice and must be paid \nin advance. No refunds will be given for non-attendance. \nPlease note: morning tea will be provided but you will need to provide your own lunch. \n\n\n\nPlease click here to register for these workshops

SUMMARY:Young recorder virtuoso goes for Baroque
DESCRIPTION:Young gun musician Lily Doak has earned a soloist spot in two prestigious classical music concerts\, where she is keen to show what her favourite instrument\, the recorder\, can do. \nThe University of Canterbury (UC)’s School of Music presents Together Again in The Great Hall of the Arts Centre Te Matatiki Toi Ora on 22 June\, the first in the Arts Centre Chamber Series. The Baroque Music Community and Educational Trust of New Zealand presents “Beatles go Baroque” at The Piano Centre on 21 June\, with a similar programme. \nDoak\, a UC Biochemistry and Music (double degree) first-year student\, says she has always loved the recorder – an instrument most music students start with but soon leave behind. Yet the humblest of wind instruments has had a revival\, claiming back concertos that were originally written for recorder but have been performed on flute for many years. \nSerious about the recorder \n“I suppose recorder is the first instrument I played\, and I have played others since\, but it’s the instrument I am most attracted to because of the freedom and expression\,” Doak says. \n“Other wind instruments seem to have a lot more resistance. I enjoy the style of music written for the recorder\, baroque and the modern music that has been written since the revival of the recorder\, and new techniques that have been developed. It is crazy and so different\, and I want to show people what the recorder is capable of.” \nUC Head of Performance Professor Mark Menzies agrees the recorder is a serious proposition. \n“The recorder is often considered a school-kid’s instrument\, but in fact to play it well at the professional\, concert-performance level takes enormous skill and practice. Lily has been an extremely motivated recorder player since she started studies at UC\,” Professor Menzies says. \nTake Vivaldi’s La Notte\, which features on the programme for the upcoming concerts. It was composed for recorder and Doak has been eager to perform it for five years. Now she has the chance and listening to different recordings as she prepared\, she found some surprising interpretations\, she says. \n“La Notte is a journey into the night. A group called Red Priest did a version and they called it ‘the nightmare’ – theirs was as close as baroque gets to heavy metal\, they took it to the extreme.” \nDoak isn’t taking the heavy metal approach\, however audiences are still in for a surprise. \n“There are moments of calm and movements where you go crazy and you can’t believe you can play that fast!” she says. \nHer other piece is by German composer Georg Philipp Telemann: “It is lighter and explores different musical styles from the French overture to Italian airs; you have to pay attention to the style you are imitating and switch styles within the one piece.” \nTime management is key \nThe talented young musician began studying at UC while still at Burnside High School. \n“The two years she spent studying both music and science while also finishing high school studies was a testament to her talent\, her ability to connect on a mature musical level\, and her delightful musicality\,” Professor Menzies says. \nDoak has been a national finalist in the New Zealand Chamber Music Competition\, a member of the New Zealand Secondary Schools Symphony Orchestra\, principal clarinet of the Burnside High School Orchestra and student conductor of the Burnside High School Junior Concert Band. \nShe is a current member of student-founded Seasonings Ensemble at UC. With playing\, music and biochemistry to juggle\, her time management skills have to be excellent. \n“I have a very strict timetable where I plan every second of the day. When I don’t stick to that\, things spiral out of control quite quickly. I work better when I am busy\, it has made me a lot more passionate about my playing.” \nAs for a future career\, Doak is still working it out\, she says. \n“I love science and music\, so maybe I will become a scientist or maybe I will play baroque music for the rest of my life. I don’t know yet. Right now I am enjoying learning and all the opportunities I have.” \nProgramme: \nTalented musicians\, led by UC Music Professor Mark Menzies\, will perform Vivaldi Recorder concerto “La Notte” RV 439\, Concerto Grosso “Beatles Go Baroque” and other hidden gems of Baroque music. \nRecorder – Lily Doak\nViolin – Mark Menzies\nCello – Tomas Hurnik\nHarpsichord – Daniel Cooper\nString ensemble of the University of Canterbury \nEvent details: \n“Beatles go Baroque” – Baroque Music Community is on 21 June at 2pm at The Piano: Centre for Music and the Arts. Tickets $30 adult\, $20 senior\, $10 student\, $5 child. Buy tickets here. Door sales also available.\nTogether Again is on Monday June 22\, 7.00pm at The Great Hall\, Arts Centre Te Matatiki Toi Ora. Tickets $20\, $10 concession. Buy tickets here. \n
