Are you seeking ways of bringing great singing and movement back into the classroom? This workshop will show you how using the Kodaly method to teach singing\, moving and dancing which will ignite a real love of singing tunefully in your classes. \nTaking the Stigma Away from Theory \nwith Judith Bell \nA fun interactive workshop where we get to try out the games and activities that make theory so popular at year 6-9 level as well as discussing the strategies and resources for running an after-school theory club. Although much of the workshop is “unplugged” the workshop also covers some engaging ways technology is used in the club. It will also look at music learning and computational thinking and how they link into the new digital technologies curriculum. \nQuirky Choir \nwith Heather Libeau-Dow \nThis year I take Junior and Senior choir in a large primary school; and a choir for 5-12 year olds in a very small school. These are for “all-comers” and the challenge is to deliver sessions that are energetic and captivating. \nThe voice in the body is the vehicle for expression; there is emphasis on good posture\, connected breathing and great diction. As repertoire is the key to success\, a wide range of material is carefully selected; including engaging NZ compositions and songs from around the world. Orff Schulwerk processes are evident throughout-incorporating vocal exploration\, movement\, rounds and improvisation. \nThis workshop is geared to teachers responsible for primary choirs and classroom/assembly singing. Reflection and discussion around developing positive choir culture will conclude this session. \nMusic and Movement with Juniors \nwith Celia Stewart \nThis workshop will incorporate a range of great ideas that will empower all teachers to introduce music activities in to their daily programme. Using speech rhymes as the motivator we will explore singing\, moving\, and playing experiences that will engage young children. The main elements of music\, beat\, rhythm\, dynamics\, pitch\, tempo and tone colour will be experienced in simple ways that all teachers can enjoy with their students. \nThe Presenters \nKate Husband has been teaching in classes for the past twenty years. She works in year 1-6 classes throughout the school week and teaches two choirs for the Christchurch School of Music on Saturdays. She has been trained in Level 1 Orff and is part way through learning the Level 1 Kodaly method.. She is passionate about keeping the art of music alive in our classrooms and in providing manageable ways for teachers to explore these too. \nJudith Bell has run the Chisnallwood Intermediate School music programme since 1999\, which provides instrumental and vocal lessons and a wide range of performance music groups. Prior to Chisnallwood\, Judith taught early childhood music classes and was an itinerant and private music teacher. She also does arranging and transcribing work. Judith is co-director for Christchurch’s Strum Strike and Blow Festival and involved in Junior Jazz Jam (for Primary school jazz bands) and the Christchurch Big Band Festival. She is co-chair of Music Education Canterbury\, is on the MENZA board and has recently become a MusicEdNet mentor looking especially at computational thinking and music learning as the new digital technologies curriculum is implemented in NZ. \nHeather Libeau-Dow After general classroom teaching Heather specialised in primary music for eleven years then lectured at the University of Canterbury – College of Education for another eleven years. Currently she has an interesting mix combining both areas – appraising College of Education primary teacher trainees on school placements; delivering choir/ class music programmes in two Christchurch schools and teaching singing from her private studio. Her Orff Schulwerk journey started more than a decade ago with VOSA Levels 1 and 2 in Melbourne; later completing the University of Waikato Post Graduate qualification and recently Level 4 in Hamilton with inspirational Orff educator Mary Helen Solomon from Florida. \nCelia Stewart has been involved in music education for many years as a primary and early childhood teacher\, lecturer in Early Childhood at the Christchurch College of Education\, primary music adviser in Canterbury with UC EdPlus at the University of Canterbury and National Facilitator in Primary Music for the Ministry of Education. She is Music Director at the Christchurch School of Music and regularly facilitates workshops for teachers\, works in schools as a specialist music teacher\, manages music events and writes resources. Celia is a flute and recorder player\, is co-director of the Strum Strike and Blow festival\, immediate past president of both Music Education Canterbury and Music Education NZ Aotearoa\, co-director of the upcoming MENZA conference in Wellington. She has a Masters in Education specializing in the Orff Schulwerk approach to music education through Waikato University.

DESCRIPTION:JAZZ ON THE ROAD\n“Changing Lives through Music” \nJazz on the Road is an exciting and challenging series of one day workshops and concerts delivered by the Rodger Fox Big Band\, featuring 4 leading US jazz musicians at venues across New Zealand in June 2017. \nConcept \nJazz on the Road is an intensive youth-oriented programme that focuses on the fundamentals of jazz music and its associated business aspects for young musicians. \n\nThe workshops will encourage students who already play jazz to improve\, supporting the development of musical skills in young people\nParticipants gather to share\, develop and challenge their own ideas and abilities. Our stellar faculty of world-renowned musicians\, innovators\, leaders and thinkers present master classes\, lectures\, workshops\, informal sessions and a concert\nThe workshop is open to all young musicians and music educators.\n\nStudents must have their own instruments to participate in the programme \nSubject areas include jazz rhythms\, performance within the band\, jazz improvisation\, music reality (theory)\, team building through music\, leadership and performance. \nThe programme exposes students to leading musicians and professionals in education\, business and performance. \nJazz on the Road focuses sessions to deliver a half day workshop and performance event with young secondary school musicians around big band and jazz concepts. Through individual workshops\, panel discussions and demonstration to the school jazz bands attending\, followed by an evening concert students will get to develop their skills and appreciation of what it takes to make great music. \nThe Rodger Fox Big Band \nThe 17 members of New Zealand’s acclaimed Rodger Fox Big Band will be accompanied by four leading international jazz musicians. Many of the musicians in the big band hold positions in major teaching institutions including the New Zealand School of Music and many High Schools. \nRodger Fox \nRodger Fox is New Zealand’s foremost jazz trombonist\, big band leader\, jazz educator\, arranger and producer. He is also the Artistic Director for a number of jazz festivals around the country. \nFeatured guest artists from the USA \nThe guest artists add a new dimension and expose the students to different styles of jazz and a different level of mastery. \nDave Weckl: Dave is an American jazz fusion drummer and leader of the Dave Weckl Band. He was inducted into the Modern Drummer Hall of Fame in 2000. Performs with Chick Corea Electric Band\, Mike Stern Trio and has featured with Weckl artists such as Paul Simon. Madonna\, George Benson\, Michel Camilo\, Robert Plant\, Anthony Jackson and The GRP All-star Big Band. Tony Lindsay – After 20 years as the lead vocalist for the group Santana\, Tony has garnered 11 GRAMMY® Awards\, traveled on several world tours and recorded on seven CDs: Milagro (1992)\, Supernatural  (1999)\, Shaman (2002)\, Ceremony (2003)\, Food for Thought (2004)\, Ultimate Santana (2007)\, and Multi-Dimensional Warrior (2008). He is currently recording his fourth solo CD. \nAdam Schroeder – Los Angeles based baritone saxophonist Adam Schroeder\, has firmly established his influential voice as a major force in the global jazz community. Recognized as a “Rising Star” on the Baritone Saxophone in Down Beat Magazine’s 59 th Annual Critic’s Poll as well as in the 76th\, 79th and 80th Annual Reader’s Poll and the JazzEd Magazine 2014 Readers Poll\, A member of the Gordon Goodwin’s Big Phat Band \nAlex Sipiagin – Trumpet. Jazz festivals worldwide have seen Alex Sipiagin performing with the likes of Dave Holland\, Michael Brecker\, the Mingus groups. \nBorn in Russia\, Alex begun studying the trumpet at age 12. In 1990\, Alex participated in the International Louis Armstrong Competition sponsored by the Thelonius Monk Institute in Washington D.C. winning top honors and after relocated to the jazz mecca of the world\, New York City. \nAll of the guest artists are experienced in working with high school aged students and bring a wealth of experience to the project. \nWhat will students be doing? \nThe group of artists will spend time in each city to present educational workshops during the day\, followed by a concert at night. This workshop will show you how using the Kodaly method to teach singing\, moving and dancing which will ignite a real love of singing tunefully in your classes. \nTaking the Stigma Away from Theory \nwith Judith Bell \n A fun interactive workshop where we get to try out the games and activities that make theory so popular at year 6-9 level as well as discussing the strategies and resources for running an after school theory club. Although much of the workshop is “unplugged” the workshop also covers some engaging ways technology is used in the club. \nQuirky Choir \nwith Heather Libeau-Dow \nThis year I take Junior and Senior choir in a large primary school; and a choir for 5-12 year olds in a very small school. These are for “all-comers”  and the challenge is to deliver sessions that are energetic and captivating. \nThe voice in the body is the vehicle for expression; there is emphasis on good posture\, connected breathing and great diction. As repertoire is the key to success\, a wide range of material is carefully selected; including engaging NZ compositions and songs from around the world. Orff Schulwerk processes are evident throughout-incorporating vocal exploration\, movement \, rounds and improvisation. \nThis workshop is geared to teachers responsible for primary choirs and classroom/assembly singing. Reflection and discussion around developing positive choir culture will conclude this session. \nSing\, Dance and Play with Juniors \nwith Celia Stewart \nThis workshop will incorporate a range of great ideas that will empower all teacher to introduce music activities in to their daily programme. Using speech rhymes as the motivator we will explore singing\, moving\, and playing experiences that will engage young children. The main elements of music\, beat\, rhythm\, dynamics\, pitch\, tempo and tone colour will be experienced in simple ways that all teachers can enjoy with their students. \n  \nThe Presenters \n Kate Husband – I have been teaching in classes for the past twenty years. I work in year 1-6 classes throughout the school week and teach two choirs for the Christchurch School of Music on Saturdays. I have been trained in Level 1 Orff and am part way through learning the Level 1 Kodaly method. I grew up off and on on the West Coast and am lucky enough to spend many holidays each year in Okarito – my favourite place. I am passionate about keeping the art of music alive in our classrooms and in providing manageable ways for teachers to explore these too. \nJudith Bell –Judith Bell has run the Chisnallwood Intermediate School music programme since 1999\, which provides instrumental and vocal lessons\, she and directs performance music groups such as all-comers-orchestra\, Jazz\, Irish and rock\, theory club\, computer music and sound tech training. Prior to Chisnallwood\, Judith taught early childhood music classes and was an itinerant and private music teacher. She also does arranging and transcribing work. Judith played in the band Barock for over 25 years and now plays in 2 Big Bands. She is a music director for Christchurch’s Strum Strike and Blow Festival for ukuleles\, marimbas and recorders\, and involved in Junior Jazz Jam (for Primary school jazz bands) and the Christchurch Big Band Festival. She is co-chair of Music Education Canterbury\, is on the MENZA board and has recently become a MusicEdNet mentor looking especially at computational thinking and music learning as the new digital technologies curriculum is implemented in NZ. Other workshop topics Judith delivers include “Successfully Using Diverse instruments in a performance group” and “Easy jazz style and improvisation tips”. \nHeather Libeau-Dow After general classroom teaching Heather specialised in primary music for eleven years then lectured at the University of Canterbury – College of Education for another eleven years. Currently she has an interesting mix combining both areas – appraising College of Education primary teacher trainees on school placements; delivering choir/ class music programmes in two Christchurch schools and teaching singing from her private studio. Her Orff Schulwerk journey started more than a decade ago with VOSA Levels 1 and 2 in Melbourne; later completing the University of Waikato Post Graduate qualification and recently Level 4  in Hamilton with inspirational Orff educator Mary Helen Solomon from Florida. Heater’s practice is strongly influenced by on-going training in Orff-Schulwerk. In line with contemporary educational pedagogy\, this creative child centred approach scaffolds musical experiences through experiential learning. Integrating language\, movement and playing\, musical skills and concepts are explored in positive environment. \nCelia Stewart Celia has been involved in music education for many years as a primary and early childhood teacher\, lecturer in Early Childhood at the Christchurch College of Education\, primary music adviser in Canterbury with UC EdPlus at the University of Canterbury and National Facilitator in Primary Music for the Ministry of Education. She is Music Director at the Christchurch School of Music and regularly facilitates workshops for teachers\, works in schools as a specialist music teacher\, manages music events and writes resources. Celia is a flute and recorder player\, is co-director of the Strum Strike and Blow festival\, immediate past president of both Music Education Canterbury and Music Education NZ Aotearoa\, co-director of the upcoming MENZA conference in Auckland and closely involved with the Christchurch Big Band Festival. She has a Masters in Education specializing in the Orff Schulwerk approach to music education through Waikato University.

This course assumes no prior knowledge\, so it’s perfect for new Sibelius users or for those that have some holes in their knowledge\, including teachers who want to brush up their skills (and stay a couple of steps ahead of students!)\, composers and arrangers who want to get started with creating their own digital scores and backing tracks and senior or tertiary level students who need to notate compositions or complete music assignments. You’ll learn how to set up a score\, input notes without using the mouse (using the computer keyboard\, or a MIDI keyboard)\, how to select music quickly\, best ways to copy and paste\, how to enter lyrics and chords\, adding dynamics\, articulations and repeat signs\, score-sharing techniques and lots of other time-saving tips. \n11.00-12.30: Sibelius Speedy Arranging: Scanning MDI files\, Workflow and Other Tips \nThis workshop is all about learning tips and tricks for quickly arranging music with Sibelius by scanning music or opening PDF files\, downloading and tweaking freely available MIDI files and using in-built Sibelius plugins and shortcuts. It’s ideal for music teachers that want to quickly create classroom arrangements for their students\, studio instrumental teachers or ensemble leaders who need to re-arrange\, transpose or simplify scores and parts and for composers. We’ll cover tips for successfully scanning printed music to make an editable score\, how to make use of MIDI files to save you time (and how to clean up the notation once imported!) and we’ll discuss workflow tips. \n1.30-3.00: Digital Portfolios \nDuring this workshop we’ll look at some of the ways music teachers can adopt easy-to-use technology to transform their music classroom. The workshop will cover two main areas: assisting student learning through a flipped classroom model and the creation of student digital portfolios using online music tools. We’ll discuss solutions for a range of school setups: BYOD schools\, schools with mixture of platforms and devices\, and schools just wanting to delve more into digital portfolio options. \n4.00-5.30: Flipping the Music Classroom \nWhat is a flipped classroom\, how does it work and why would I want it? By taking advantage of the shift in learning opportunities made available by technology\, you can harness the “natural” communication methods of students – all while simultaneously catering for different learning styles and paces. During this session\, you’ll learn how you can use Noteflight in the teaching studio and classroom. Discover how quick it is to set up a score\, enter notes\, copy and paste music and transpose. Learn some tips and tricks and explore lesson plans and activities that you can use with your students. \n11.00-12.30: iPad Projects for the Music Classroom Hands On \niPads are a fantastic tool in the music classroom. They are highly portable\, multi-functional and there are a wealth of inexpensive creative apps available. This workshop will show you a range of easy\, adaptable projects for students of all ages. There will be ideas for the one-iPad classroom as well as for 1:1 iPad programs and everything in between. During the day we’ll focus on the learning outcomes that students can achieve with iPads in the music classroom. We’ll start with a series of creative projects using GarageBand including arranging\, composing and storytelling. We’ll then explore sound\, composition and performance with MadPad and finish with an app-smashing program music activity which combines storytelling\, images\, narration\, and mood music. DESCRIPTION:An opportunity to immerse yourself in the Kodaly approach to teaching music in the classroom\, while developing your own musicianship skills.\nThe course will be an introduction to all the components of the Australian Kodaly Certificate\, which The Muse plans to offer next year\, in conjunction with Sound Thinking Australia under the leadership of James Cuskelly who is accredited to assess the certificate in Australia. Anyone involved in teaching should aim to attend all sessions\, however it is possible for individuals to attend some components of the course for their own interest without attending the whole course\, for instance\, people interested just in developing their own musicianship or choral conducting skills\, or people just wishing to sing in the choir. \nThe Kodály approach to music education is based on the understanding that access to music making is a basic human right\, that music education should be fun\, inclusive and musical\, and should be taught in a logical\, experiential sequence. This weekend is a chance to learn about this incredibly effective approach to music education\, while picking up lots of fun games\, songs\, dances and activities to share with children\, as well as developing your own musicianship skills. People just wanting to attend for their own interest\, who aren’t working with children are also welcome. \nThe Three Days will cover: \nMusicianship: the study of sight-singing\, score reading\, aural perception\, musical dictation and analysis using the tools of the Kodály approach (tonic sol-fa\, rhythm syllables and Curwen hand signs). \nMethodology: the application of Kodály’s principles to the development of classroom and studio teaching programs that are suitable for Australasian children. It includes the study of: Curriculum development\, Teaching techniques\, Sequencing learning\, Lesson planning and assessment. \nTeaching techniques is the practical application of teaching strategies covered in Methodology. \nCultural materials involves learning\, collecting and analysing the folk music of New Zealand and other nations to determine its suitability for pedagogical processes outlined in methodology and its ability to support a developmental music program. \nChoral and Ensemble Techniques is the study of choral conducting\, rehearsal strategies and voice production. \nCost: Full Fee including lunch on Friday and Saturday is $430.00 ($410.00 for Friends of The Muse and Menza Members)\nFurther concessions available for students\, recent graduates and those on a low income. Contact us to discuss. \nAbout the Tutors: \nMaree Hennessy is a recognised Lead Teacher\, professional development facilitator and mentor. \nMaree has extensive experience in teaching and learning in multi-level contexts across sectors. She has worked in Early Childhood\, Primary\, Secondary\, Tertiary and community contexts and is highly skilled in developing excellence in teacher capacity. \nMaree currently oversees the renowned Masters Pedagogy program based in the Kodály philosophy at Holy Names University \nPrior to her appointment at Holy Names University\, Maree worked as Senior Project Writer for Curriculum to Classroom (C2C) materials designed to support Queensland teachers in the implementation of the Australian Curriculum: The Arts. \nMaree was editor\, key writer and demonstration teacher for the recently released KMEIA ‘Middle Years Music Education’ DVD resource for teachers. She has co-ordinated the Open Classroom Series for KMEIA Qld and lectures in Aural Pedagogy in the Sound Thinking Summer Program\, Brisbane\, a course accredited with UNE(Canberra)\, ACU (Brisbane) and the Liszt Academy (Budapest) Masters programs. \nMaree has presented at conferences in Australia and abroad and her work explores the impact of effective pedagogical practice in contemporary music education settings. \nMaree has a particular interest in and commitment to teacher development. She believes collaboration and reflection are key to building professional learning communities and in achieving excellence in teaching and learning. \nMegan Flint (M.Mus.(Hons)\, B.Ed.\, Dip. Tchg.\, ATCL (Voice))\, has a background in education and music\, as both a primary school teacher and music specialist. She is a past member of the New Zealand National Youth Choir (1997-1999) and sings with Voices New Zealand Chamber Choir and the University of Auckland Chamber Choir. \nMegan completed her Masters degree in Choral Conducting through The University of Auckland with Dr Karen Grylls.  She is a practitioner of the Kodály methodology in music education\, having completed her training through The Cuskelly College of Music\, Australia.  Megan is a conducting mentor for the New Zealand Choral Federation. \nAs Teacher in Charge of Choirs at St Cuthbert’s College in Auckland\, Megan’s choirs regularly feature at The Kids Sing and The Big Sing choral Mcompetitions run by the NZ Choral Federation. Do you wonder how the songs you hear on the radio or itunes are made? Now’s your chance. \nCome and tour one of New Zealand’s biggest purpose-built studios right here in Chch. Orange Studios has a fantastic vibe and their staff make it such a cool place to visit. Come and hang out with Michael and his team\, see how the place works\, where the musicians sit\, where we put the loud instruments and how each room is set up. \nSome things you will learn about are:\n• How the rooms are specifically built to make sure the music sounds great\n• How we get the best sound out of each instrument\n• What all the buttons on the sound desk do\n• How a recording session runs and who calls the shots\n• How after we record the music\, we work on it to make it sound even better! \nThe tour will take about 1 hour (depending on the questions that you ask) and costs nothing. The sessions are open to any child (between 6 and 14 years) who are interested in how the songs or music you love is made.
