SUMMARY:Lower Hutt - Sharing the joy of music with kids- teachers' & carers' workshop
DESCRIPTION:Because Arohanui Strings passionately believe that all children deserve the opportunity to participate in music-making every day\, we are offering a FREE teacher workshop this term. The object is to help all teachers and caregivers enjoy simple music-making with their tamariki\, using minimal props and technology. Music is a great tool to encourage empathy\, pro-social behaviour and classroom skills like listening\, making a circle\, taking turns etc. We have developed a valuable resource for teachers of the 5-8 age group\, The Alphabet Songbook. Our workshop will be based on this book and how to use it in the classroom for joyful movement\, as well as building literacy and numeracy through music. Check it out here: www.alphabetsongbook.nz Books will be available for sale on the day. \nWhere: Kawakawa room\, Stokes Valley Community Hub\, Lower Hutt\nWho: all teachers\, teacher aides\, and caregivers of junior primary school (approx up to age 8)\, especially those who feel they “can’t sing”. \n \nArohanui Strings-Sistema Hutt Valley is sponsoring a unique PD event for teachers and caregivers of young children. We have been teaching music in the Hutt Valley for nine years\, providing quality youth orchestra classes with instruments provided\, all free of charge to children age 6 and up. In addition to our after-school orchestra\, we have also visited classrooms in the northern Hutt schools regularly\, working with whole classes and their teachers. Using online and free resources in conjunction with quality audio hardware\, this workshop will be hands-on and based in the context of your school. Links to NCEA and Production Technology Unit standards will be included. By the end of this workshop\, participants will have recorded a song from scratch and in doing so increase their confidence\, knowledge and ability. It is a goal of Martin’s\, that teachers would be able to record their own students the following day.  \n1:30-2:15pm What do you do with electronic students? \nThis workshop looks at the skills laptop music performers and composers need. It covers what you could offer to your students and what decisions you might need to make. Whilst the PLD is really important\, it is not vital when we are wanting to delay community outbreaks as much as possible. MENZA are currently working on a plan to support teachers moving to digital teaching and expect more details on this early this week.\nMonday 23rd March (Secondary and ITM)\nVenue: Spotswood College\, 129 South Road\, Spotswood\, New Plymouth 4310 \nNote\, this day will be tailored to the needs of the attendees\, and you are encouraged to bring your questions along with your charged laptops.  \nREGISTER HERE\nSession 1 9am-12pm.  \n9am Introduction\, questions\, outline and connections \n9:30-10:30am NCEA updates and workshop \nThis workshop will guide ITMs and teachers through the upcoming changes as part of the NCEA standards review and rewrite. Your feedback on changes will be sought\, and there will be a discussion on the implication of future directions for ITMs and HODs of Music. Current NCEA standards will be discussed and any of your questions answered.  \n10:30-11:45am BYOD recording for any student – Part 1 \nThis workshop will guide ITMs and teachers through a BYOD friendly recording setup suitable for teachers and their students. Worldwide\, musicians are using the ability to record and hear their practice as a powerful tool in improving their playing. Using online and free resources in conjunction with quality audio hardware\, this workshop will be hands-on and based in the context of your school. By the end of this workshop\, participants will have recorded a song from scratch multiple times and in doing so increase their confidence\, knowledge and ability. It is a goal of Martin’s\, that teachers would be able to record their own students the following day.  \n11:45-12pm Answering Questions (and evaluation if only attending the morning session) \n12-12:45 Lunch break \nSession 2 12:45-3:45pm  \n12:45-1:15 BYOD recording for any student – Part 2 \nThe morning workshop continued after a break\, partially to see if you can remember what you learnt earlier.  \n1:15-3:30 pm What do you do with electronic students? \nFor any musician who has wondered what all the lights and buttons are about on a stage\, this session is a great introduction.  Starting with looking at the skills laptop music performers and composers need it moves into how to incorporate electronics with traditional instruments. It includes and an overview of different styles and a demonstration of the tools used to compose and perform\, including for Smokefree Rocksquest/Tangata Beats. It covers what you could offer to your students and what decisions you might need to make. This workshop will include a thorough demonstration of software to help train modern electronic musicians in keyboard\, pad-drumming and electronic drumming. SUMMARY:Kerikeri - Exploring Music with Children (CANCELLED DUE TO COVID-19)
DESCRIPTION:Come and explore how music can be integrated into the everyday classroom using the multi-sensory Orff approach that benefits our children. Starting with a simple story or Ukulele song we will explore different ways in which we can use language to create music and movement. Enjoy this hands on approach to music and the arts. This will be useful for early childhood teachers and for teachers of the early years in primary school. Some of the ideas will also be adaptable for middle and upper primary school.
