SUMMARY:MENZA Online Workshop: Releasing Students' original music works into the marketplace
DESCRIPTION:Trevor Faville\, who teaches secondary music in the Central North Region for Te Kura o Te Kura Pounamu (The Correspondence School)\, talks through the process of releasing students’ original music works into the marketplace\, with consideration to fundamentals like how royalties work\, ownership of master recordings and what this means\, how streaming works\, how to write press releases and more. Essentially; how can akonga move into a professional environment with original material? \nTrevor has been running this programme for selected students every year\, and the focus is on both demystifying the process and empowering the individual artists – so it’s very student friendly. \nTrevor will talk through the specifics of how this programme works\, and what are some of the key elements to know if akonga are releasing original work. \nRegister here to obtain the ZOOM link for this FREE online workshop. \n

SUMMARY:MENZA Workshops and AGM
DESCRIPTION:NOTICE OF MENZA AGM\n18 June 2022\, Newlands College\, WellingtonWorkshops: 1.30-2.30pm\n\nPrimary/Intermediate workshop with Makaira Waugh and Rawiri Hindle\, and launch of the new Poutokomanawa resource: Te Koha a Tāne\nSecondary workshop is a Q&A session on the RAS with Matt Stenbo\n\n\nMENZA AGM: 3-4pm \nPlease RSVP here by Thursday 16 June for catering purposes and to obtain the ZOOM links to the AGM and both workshops. We look forward to welcoming you to the MENZA AGM and/or workshops! \n \n\n\nTe Koha a Tāne education resource launch\nTe Koha a Tāne is a new music and movement resource for Y0-8 kaiako from the Poutokomanawa team who brought you Aruaru ki Tawhiti/Chase across the Waves. The beautifully illustrated resource retells the story of Rātā and the Waka from the tree’s perspective\, exploring the conservation theme through 10 episodes of hands-on music\, dance\, drama and art activities that any kaiako can deliver. Featuring original waiata and karakia that encapsulate the learning\, the resource will be free to download in both te reo Māori (coming soon) and English versions from the MENZA website\, along with videos and other online support material to assist your teaching. \nThe one hour workshop will be an opportunity to meet the creators\, celebrate the launch of the resource\, and take part in a series of short music and movement activity examples including a new waiata featuring music by Kiwi Kidsong writer Radha Sahar (nee Wardrop). \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nKia ora e te whanau \nThe MENZA AGM will be held on the 18th July at Newlands College at 3pm and will be live-streamed. If you would like to attend the AGM and/or workshops (1.30-2.30pm\, also to be live-streamed) please RSVP here (for catering purposes and ZOOM links\, which will be available for the AGM and both workshops). \nDue to a recent resignation of a Board member\, the MENZA Board at the time of the AGM will have five elected Board members and three co-opted Board members\, however\, the MENZA Constitution states that we should have nine elected members to be on the board\, therefore we will need to have an election. \nIn regards to electing Board members\, the MENZA constitution states the following: \n8. ELECTIONS \n\n\nThe period during which voting may take place in elections for the Board shall be determined by the Board and shall include the day of the Annual General Meeting. Where distance voting is to occur the period shall begin not more than fourteen and not less than seven days prior to an Annual General Meeting. \n\n\nNominations for Board members as defined in 7(a)(i) shall be forwarded in writing to the Secretary no less than twenty-eight days prior to the date at which voting begins. \n\n\n(c) Each nomination shall incorporate the signatures of a proposer and a seconder who must both be then current financial members and shall be also signed by the nominee signifying acceptance of the nomination. In the event of there being fewer written nominations received by the due date than the number of Board members allowed for in 7 (a) (i) above\, further nominations may be sought by a committee set up by the Board for this purpose and called the Nominating Committee. \n\n\nI would like to put forward to the members that we vote to fill the four vacant positions on the board. Currently\, the three co-opted members on the board are Charlotte Nicklin\, Christian McDonald and Makaira Waugh. They have indicated that they would like to continue their time on the board and put themselves forward to be elected onto the MENZA Board. \nAs we have three MENZA members putting themselves forward to be on the Board we are seeking at least one other member to put themselves forward. If there are more than four members seeking a position on the board\, an election will be held. As the Chair\, I would like that position to be elected at the AGM. This means that for this election\, the time frames to elect new board members will be different to the constitution. \nI propose the following dates: \n\n8th June: Nominations close for the four vacant positions on the Board. Click here for a nomination form.\n10th June: Information regarding the nominations will be sent out to MENZA members. Online voting will open.\n16th June: Online voting closes\n18th June: At the AGM\, members in attendance will vote. Both online and in-person votes will be counted. The new members elected to the Board will be announced.\n\nIf any members object to this process can you please email admin@menza.co.nz before the 8th of June 2020. We will then follow the process that is outlined in the Constitution. If you would like to discuss the process further or are interested in joining the MENZA board please email me directly at: blau@newlands.school.nz. \nBen Lau\nMENZA Chair \nRSVP for AGM&workshops and ZOOM links\nMENZA Board Nomination Form

SUMMARY:Clarinet ZOOM Masterclass with Yvette Audain
DESCRIPTION:Following the success (and fun!) of my clarinet workshop at the recent New Zealand Concert Bands Association (NZCBA) Festival\, and some exceptionally humbling encouragement from participants and band directors\, I’ve decided to host my first ever online workshop.\n\nDuring the first part I will introduce and discuss the many benefits and insights gained through my recent practice in long tones – this isn’t only a musical and technical practice as I’ve been discovering it to be way more holistic than that as a tool for mental and physical wellness.\n\nThis will be followed by an open forum to which I invite you to bring any questions you may have about your playing. Participants are also encouraged to contribute their own answers.\n\nSuitable for all ages and levels\, whether clarinet is your first\, second or umpteenth instrument! If you’ve found yourself teaching it when you haven’t been playing long yourself\, please don’t be shy to bring any questions relevant to that.\n\nThis workshop is also open internationally and while I may not be the number one clarinet expert in all the world\, I bring my own life experience and perspective as a musician\, composer\, teacher and human who has largely lived\, learned and loved life through the clarinet.\n\nPlease email me at audainmusic@gmail.com with your email address to register – I will send the Zoom link in a confirmation email upon receipt of payment.\n\nLooking forward to seeing you there with your clarinet\,\n\nYvette Audain (M.Mus\, GradDipTchg) 🙂\nhttp://www.yvetteaudain.com

SUMMARY:Te Ika a Māui Resource launch

SUMMARY:Wellington Orchestra Festival 2023
DESCRIPTION:A day of orchestral rehearsal and performance for Primary and Intermediate-aged students who can read music and play an instrument. \nWe have six pieces arranged by Richard Oswin\, ranging from classical favourites to film scores and pop hits. \nThis is an ideal opportunity for students who practice mostly on their own to join other students and make music in one big ensemble. The technical difficulty of the music is suitable for students in their second or third year of learning. Along with the four orchestra sections\, there are parts for drum kit\, hand percussion\, guitar\, bass\, keyboard\, Orff xylophone and recorders. Students can work on their parts with instrumental tutors leading up to the day\, nearly prepared to play up to 6 pieces. Schools can also use the repertoire to play in their own ensemble during the year. \nThis year we will be conducted by Mike Ashton. The day begins with a massed rehearsal\, followed by sectionals and finishes with a concert of the six pieces. The concert will also include a guest performance from musicians from Orchestra Wellington. \nSchools registered for WOF will also get the opportunity to take part in Orchestra Wellington’s Education in Schools Programme and the Big Bash – musicians from Orchestra Wellington will come to your school to help prepare your students! A separate schedule will be sent out so that schools can sign up for these workshops over Term 2. \nContact Joanna Calvert if you have any questions. We encourage new schools and students to participate in this event\, come and join the fun. Sign up for WOF using the link below and then you will get sent the sheet music to start practising! \nRegister here. \nCost: \n\nMENZA Member: $100 per school\nNon-member: $130 (includes membership to MENZA for one year)\n\nOrganiser: Joanna Calvert –  calvertj@scotscollege.school.nz \nDownload WOF 2023 A4 Poster

SUMMARY:MEFA Musicworks Ensemble Festival 2023
DESCRIPTION:New Zealand’s fastest growing National Festival that caters for all ensembles from Jazz Band\, Concert Band\, Stage bands\, Orchestras and a mix of small ensembles. \nThis year the festival is bigger\, brighter\, and better than ever with a new name MEFA (Music Ensemble Festival Aotearoa)\, more activities\, performances\, concerts and workshops. Including performances and mentoring from the members from leading National bands and ensembles. \nMEFA offers both schools and community ensembles a truly encompassing festival. \nFor schools\, MEFA offers an all-in-one experience for all ensembles with the ability for the different ensembles to perform on different days\, giving all students an opportunity to perform and learn. \nHear professional ensembles perform at one of the evening Gala Concerts and attend mentoring with great educators as well as Band Director professional development sessions. \nWith the addition this year of a full line up of workshops\, teacher professional development days and a new awards system\, MEFA makes it the perfect opportunity in term three for any school to participate. \n*Check out the WeBO 2022 Event Schedule \n*All performances and concerts at WeBO 2022 are accessible and free of charge to the public.   \nHow it All Works \nDaily Outline \nEach day features a key ensemble style split into morning and afternoon sessions\, with ensembles scheduled for their part of the day to perform on the main stage\, then moving to a private ensemble workshop directly after the performance with one of the clinicians. \nWhen not perfuming\, members of the ensemble are encouraged to attend the sessions remaining performances in the audience to support the other ensembles. \nBoth the morning and afternoon sessions have complimentary workshops and mentoring sessions running all day so ensembles can perform for example in the morning session then attend workshops in the afternoon and the opposite for those performing in the afternoon. \n*Each day ends with an awards ceremony. \n\nYour Ensemble Concert Performance \nEach ensemble has a performance time of 20 mins on the main stage and 5 mins either side for entering and leaving the main stage. \nPerformances will be evaluated by some of of New Zealand and Australia’s top educators and clinicians who will provide valuable written and spoken feedback on the  performances\, as well as taking a support clinic immediately afterwards. \nAfter your ensembles main performance the group will be taken to the workshop hall nearby for a short personal workshop with one of the clinicians who has watched and evaluated your performance. \n*The second hall is set to allow a quick transition for attendees and a more relaxed atmosphere for the workshop. \n\nDaily Workshops \nDuring the course of the day a series of workshops and mentoring sessions are run in the morning then again in the afternoon. This allows MEFA participants the options of attending and supporting their performance session\, and also receive valuable tuition and support from our great mentors in workshops at the opposite part of the day. \n\nAwards \nEvery ensemble performing receives a Platinum\, Gold or Silver participation certificate along with a director’s video containing the adjudicators voice over. MEFA is primarily a participation event\, so no matter your ensembles skill set\, or repertoire\, awards are given on key criteria that encompass all aspects of an ensemble. \n\nEvening Concert Performances \nOn the evenings of the festival we have fantastic gala concerts with a combination of professional players\, ensembles and invited MEFA participants. \n\n*Send questions and registrations to: education@musicworks.co.nz \n*Register here
