SUMMARY:NZ Musicological Society Conference - Call for papers
DESCRIPTION:CALL FOR PAPERS \n2024 Annual Meeting of the New Zealand Musicological Society \nMusicology Matters Today Saturday 7th — Monday 9th December\, 2024 \nNew Zealand School of Music—Te Kōkī\,\nTe Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington \nKeynote address: Emeritus Professor Peter Walls\nPublic concert opportunity: Orchestra Wellington\, “A Modern Hero” \nDeadline for proposals: Sunday 26th May\, 2024 \nThe past few years have been challenging for musicology in New Zealand and around the world. This conference aims to affirm the importance of musicology and establish credible pathways for its future. \nQuestions related to the conference theme might include: \n\nHow is musicology in Aotearoa promoting knowledge and rewards for performers\,composers\, and listeners?\nHow can tertiary music programmes articulate their worth in non-financial terms?\nWhat new pedagogical and research approaches might widen musicology’s appeal and contribution?\nHow is musicology moving forward in its research involving place\, race and gender?\nHow might musicology’s engagement with the past be reconceptualised in forward-looking terms?\nHow is musicology building its relevance to other musical and broader disciplines and practices? How can these relationships be deepened?\nWhat challenges does musicology face in an increasingly digital and online world\, especially given the social and physical foundations of music and its performance?\n\nAll music research is welcome\, with a suggested coda of commentary or points of meta- cognition allied with any of the conference questions. We also welcome abstracts from disciplines outside of music where the paper has a music focus and relevance to the conference theme. \nConference presentations may take the following forms: \n\nFormal conference papers (20 minutes\, plus 10 minutes for questions and discussion)\nInteractive workshops (30 minutes)\nLecture recitals and demonstrations (20 minutes\, plus 10 minutes for questions anddiscussion)\nPanel sessions (30 minutes per participant. Please omit your name and other identifying information from the text of your document. In the body of the email\, include your full name\, status (academic staff\, postgraduate student\, independent scholar\, etc.) and institutional affiliation where appropriate\, and your place of residence. \nDetails for the student paper competition will be announced shortly. \nThe academic committee consists of:\nHamish Robb (Victoria University of Wellington)\,\nChair Peter Adams (University of Otago)\nAllan Badley (University of Auckland)\nNick Braae (Waikato Institute of Technology)\nGregory Camp (University of Auckland)\nSunhee Koo (University of Auckland)\nNancy November (University of Auckland)\nPolly Sussex (Independent Scholar\, Auckland)\nFrancis Yapp (University of Canterbury)
