With 14 years of collaborating on many educational programs and with over 50 years of combined teaching experience\,All by Ear is an evolution of the original method of learning jazz (by ear). \nJazz musicians since the earliest days of the music learned to play by imitating other musicians.\nAll Ears takes this concept into an educational environment and provides participants the opportunity to learn how to improve their jazz playing while being supervised by experience jazz musicians and veteran teachers.” \nImportant information \nAll Ears will run from 9am-3pm Mon Jan 23rd – Fri 27th culminating in a public concert on the Friday evening. \nDaily schedule:  \nSession 1 9am – 12pm\nSession 2 1pm -3pm \nRehearsals begin promptly at 9:00 am. You’ll learn how to set up a score\, input notes without using the mouse (using the computer keyboard\, or a MIDI keyboard)\, how to select music quickly\, best ways to copy and paste\, how to enter lyrics and chords\, adding dynamics\, articulations and repeat signs\, score-sharing techniques and lots of other time-saving tips. \n11.00-12.30: Sibelius Speedy Arranging: Scanning MDI files\, Workflow and Other Tips \nThis workshop is all about learning tips and tricks for quickly arranging music with Sibelius by scanning music or opening PDF files\, downloading and tweaking freely available MIDI files and using in-built Sibelius plugins and shortcuts. It’s ideal for music teachers that want to quickly create classroom arrangements for their students\, studio instrumental teachers or ensemble leaders who need to re-arrange\, transpose or simplify scores and parts and for composers. We’ll cover tips for successfully scanning printed music to make an editable score\, how to make use of MIDI files to save you time (and how to clean up the notation once imported!) and we’ll discuss workflow tips. \n1.30-3.00: Digital Portfolios \nDuring this workshop we’ll look at some of the ways music teachers can adopt easy-to-use technology to transform their music classroom. The workshop will cover two main areas: assisting student learning through a flipped classroom model and the creation of student digital portfolios using online music tools. They are highly portable\, multi-functional and there are a wealth of inexpensive creative apps available. This workshop will show you a range of easy\, adaptable projects for students of all ages. There will be ideas for the one-iPad classroom as well as for 1:1 iPad programs and everything in between. During the day we’ll focus on the learning outcomes that students can achieve with iPads in the music classroom. DESCRIPTION:This workshop is for both generalist and specialist classroom music teachers In the workshop we will will explore a simple process beginning with a small building block such as a poem a chant\, a patere or a song and demonstrate how we can provide opportunities for children to play with it and build on it through voice\, body percussion\, untuned and tuned percussion instruments. Lots of great ideas to take back and use in your classroom. \nCelia Stewart has been involved in music education for many years as a primary and early childhood teacher\, lecturer in Early Childhood at the Christchurch College of Education\, primary music adviser in Canterbury with UC EdPlus at the University of Canterbury and National Facilitator in Primary Music for the Ministry of Education. She is Music Director at the Christchurch School of Music and also regularly facilitates workshops for teachers\, works in schools as a specialist music teacher and manages music events. Celia is a flute and recorder player and has recently completed a Masters in Education specializing in the Orff Schulwerk approach to music education at Waikato University.

DESCRIPTION:Music Matters in Early Childhood – A Workshop with Celia Stewart\nWhere: SIT Downtown Campus\, Room 211\, 25 Don St\, Invercargill\nWhen: Sunday 31 July 11:00am – 2:30pm\nCost: $40 for MENZA members\, $50 for non-MENZA members\nThis workshop will explore practical ideas to use in early childhood and will demonstrate how music can impact on every area of children’s development. We will chant\, sing\, move\, play\, and listen using a range of props and equipment in a workshop that will send you away with ideas you can incorporate immediately into your programmes. \nCelia Stewart has been involved in music education all her life as a primary teacher\, flute & recorder teacher\, Lecturer in ECE\, Primary Music Adviser & Education manager for the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra\, before taking up her current role as Music Director of the Christchurch School of Music. She also works as a music specialist in primary schools and is a regular presenter of workshops in ECE & primary music throughout NZ through her music education consultancy\, Tune Into Music. In 2013 she completed a Masters in Education through the University of Waikato specialising in the Orff Schulwerk approach to music education. \nThis event is organised by MENZA (Music Education New Zealand Aotearoa) and SME (Southland Music Education). \nREGISTER HERE \nPlease note there will be a 30 min break from 12:30-1:00pm.
