SUMMARY:MENZA Workshops and AGM
DESCRIPTION:NOTICE OF MENZA AGM\n18 June 2022\, Newlands College\, WellingtonWorkshops: 1.30-2.30pm\n\nPrimary/Intermediate workshop with Makaira Waugh and Rawiri Hindle\, and launch of the new Poutokomanawa resource: Te Koha a Tāne\nSecondary workshop is a Q&A session on the RAS with Matt Stenbo\n\n\nMENZA AGM: 3-4pm \nPlease RSVP here by Thursday 16 June for catering purposes and to obtain the ZOOM links to the AGM and both workshops. We look forward to welcoming you to the MENZA AGM and/or workshops! \n \n\n\nTe Koha a Tāne education resource launch\nTe Koha a Tāne is a new music and movement resource for Y0-8 kaiako from the Poutokomanawa team who brought you Aruaru ki Tawhiti/Chase across the Waves. The beautifully illustrated resource retells the story of Rātā and the Waka from the tree’s perspective\, exploring the conservation theme through 10 episodes of hands-on music\, dance\, drama and art activities that any kaiako can deliver. Featuring original waiata and karakia that encapsulate the learning\, the resource will be free to download in both te reo Māori (coming soon) and English versions from the MENZA website\, along with videos and other online support material to assist your teaching. \nThe one hour workshop will be an opportunity to meet the creators\, celebrate the launch of the resource\, and take part in a series of short music and movement activity examples including a new waiata featuring music by Kiwi Kidsong writer Radha Sahar (nee Wardrop). \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nKia ora e te whanau \nThe MENZA AGM will be held on the 18th July at Newlands College at 3pm and will be live-streamed. If you would like to attend the AGM and/or workshops (1.30-2.30pm\, also to be live-streamed) please RSVP here (for catering purposes and ZOOM links\, which will be available for the AGM and both workshops). \nDue to a recent resignation of a Board member\, the MENZA Board at the time of the AGM will have five elected Board members and three co-opted Board members\, however\, the MENZA Constitution states that we should have nine elected members to be on the board\, therefore we will need to have an election. \nIn regards to electing Board members\, the MENZA constitution states the following: \n8. ELECTIONS \n\n\nThe period during which voting may take place in elections for the Board shall be determined by the Board and shall include the day of the Annual General Meeting. Where distance voting is to occur the period shall begin not more than fourteen and not less than seven days prior to an Annual General Meeting. \n\n\nNominations for Board members as defined in 7(a)(i) shall be forwarded in writing to the Secretary no less than twenty-eight days prior to the date at which voting begins. \n\n\n(c) Each nomination shall incorporate the signatures of a proposer and a seconder who must both be then current financial members and shall be also signed by the nominee signifying acceptance of the nomination. In the event of there being fewer written nominations received by the due date than the number of Board members allowed for in 7 (a) (i) above\, further nominations may be sought by a committee set up by the Board for this purpose and called the Nominating Committee. \n\n\nI would like to put forward to the members that we vote to fill the four vacant positions on the board. Currently\, the three co-opted members on the board are Charlotte Nicklin\, Christian McDonald and Makaira Waugh. They have indicated that they would like to continue their time on the board and put themselves forward to be elected onto the MENZA Board. \nAs we have three MENZA members putting themselves forward to be on the Board we are seeking at least one other member to put themselves forward. If there are more than four members seeking a position on the board\, an election will be held. As the Chair\, I would like that position to be elected at the AGM. This means that for this election\, the time frames to elect new board members will be different to the constitution. \nI propose the following dates: \n\n8th June: Nominations close for the four vacant positions on the Board. Click here for a nomination form.\n10th June: Information regarding the nominations will be sent out to MENZA members. Online voting will open.\n16th June: Online voting closes\n18th June: At the AGM\, members in attendance will vote. Both online and in-person votes will be counted. The new members elected to the Board will be announced.\n\nIf any members object to this process can you please email admin@menza.co.nz before the 8th of June 2020. We will then follow the process that is outlined in the Constitution. If you would like to discuss the process further or are interested in joining the MENZA board please email me directly at: blau@newlands.school.nz. \nBen Lau\nMENZA Chair \nRSVP for AGM&workshops and ZOOM links\nMENZA Board Nomination Form

SUMMARY:ZOOM session: Leading out of White Spaces with Ann Milne
DESCRIPTION:In the last two years\, Covid-19 has forced us to approach our teaching differently and we have been confronted by the disparities that are the reality for many of our learners. As we\, once again\, return to our schools\, what did we learn and what have we changed? As you planned with your staff for this year\, does 2022 look like business-as-usual or even\, with contingencies in place for keeping children safe\, a tweaked version of that familiar ‘normal’? The truth is that Māori\, and the other students we minoritise never have been\, and never will be\, safe in that normal. For these young people it’s “distance” learning all the time\, whether the lessons are coming via an app on a laptop\, or Mum’s phone\, or directly from the teacher standing in front of you\, it’s all disconnected. \nWhen our ‘normal’ Western\, whitestream model of schooling is the problem\, school leaders have both the responsibility\, and the unique opportunity to lead us away from this practice. But how much change are we really prepared to make? Why is better literacy\, numeracy\, or NCEA scores simply not good enough? Why don’t our one-off days or weeks\, the te reo Māori labels\, the murals or carvings dotted around our schools\, or our kapa haka ‘improve’ our achievement levels? How does a critically conscious\, culturally sustaining curriculum really make a difference and how do you embed this practice in your leadership and your school? \nBio \nDr Ann Milne \nDr Ann Milne is a Pākehā educator\, writer\, researcher\, and former school principal whose work challenges the whiteness of our education system and focuses on a critically conscious\, culturally sustaining learning approach centred on students’ cultural identities. Her book\, Colouring in the White Spaces: Reclaiming Cultural Identity in Whitestream Schools\, was published in 2016 and her services to education were recognised in 2020 when she was appointed a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit. After retiring from her principal’s role five years ago\, she established Ann Milne Education and Ann Milne Online to share her long leadership experience in this area with schools and institutions who want to think differently about their practice.

SUMMARY:MENZA Conference Online: Bigger\, Better\, Brains - Music education and brain development with Dr Anita Collins
DESCRIPTION:Dr Anita Collins is an award-winning educator\, researcher and writer in the field of brain development and music learning. Anita is best known for her role as on-screen expert and campaign lead for the ‘Don’t Stop the Music’ documentary that aired on the ABC in late 2018 and author of ‘The Music Advantage’. She is internationally recognized for her unique work in translating the scientific research of neuroscientists and psychologists to the everyday parent\, teacher and student. Anita brings a wealth of experience as an active educator to every presentation. She is an experienced classroom teachers and conductor (Canberra Grammar School)\, has been musical director for three award winning productions and she has over a decade of experience as a teacher educator across all areas of tertiary education (University of Canberra and the Australian National University). \nNeuroscience and psychology researchers have done extensive studies over the last 20 years to understand how the brain processes music and why music learning seems to be such a cognitively unique activity. Musically trained children have better language and communication skills\, can focus for longer and are more likely to stick with difficult problems until they solve them\, they are able to control their own emotional responses and understand emotional responses of others and they have significantly better working and long-term memory systems. These enhancements then support higher levels of overall academic achievement\, motivation\, stress management\, self-regulation and awareness. Most notably\, music learning has been found to improve neural communication issues associated with autism\, ADHD\, dyslexia and reading and language learning delays. The research is now starting to reveal why music learning is so effective at enhancing brain function. Come along and hear Dr Collins speak about this exciting and impactful research. SUMMARY:MENZA Conference Online: Curriculum design with Dr Graham McPhail
DESCRIPTION:Making deep connections within and across our curriculum: an approach to curriculum design\, with Dr Graham McPhail. \nOne way in which the hauora of our ākonga can be nourished at school is through providing opportunities for deep conceptual learning. This workshop session responds to the call for deep learning and the development of critical thinking in music education – two catch-cries of the 21st century learning narrative. I will provide some examples of curriculum design and pedagogy that have been developed using the CDC Model – a model aimed at bringing about curriculum design coherence for deep learning – and then will work with participants using the model to design a topic or lesson. The aim of the workshop is to increase our awareness of the importance of our design competencies and the impact this can have on student learning. While examples shared will deal with typical western music topics\, the potential for the model to be used through a bi-cultural lens will also be explored. \nDr Graham McPhail is a senior lecturer in the School of Curriculum and Pedagogy\, in the Faculty of Education and Social Work\, at the University of Auckland\, New Zealand. He took up this position in 2015 after twenty years of work in the secondary education sector including three years as the National Moderator for NCEA Music. His current research is centred on the role of knowledge in the curriculum\, in particular within C21schooling and music education contexts. Along with Dr Vicki Thorpe and Dr Stuart Wise he edited New Zealand’s first volume on secondary school music education Educational Change and the Secondary School Music Curriculum in Aotearoa New Zealand published by Routledge  in 2018. \nThis workshop is free and you don’t have to be a MENZA member to participate. SUMMARY:MENZA Conference Online: Enabling student agency in the music classroom
DESCRIPTION:In this workshop\, facilitated by Robyn McQueen\, we will review some of the literature around musical agency and student agency in musical contexts\, and consider how to apply this in responsive ways that are relevant in Aotearoa New Zealand. Themes to be considered include student identity and leadership\, collaboration\, formal and informal approaches\, and repertoire. Examples of practice will be presented that demonstrate making connections between musical learning experiences and students’ lives and learning outside of music class. Time and numbers permitting\, participants will be invited to converse about aspects of their own practice that enhance student agency in music lessons. \nThis workshop is free and you don’t have to be a MENZA member to join.
