SUMMARY:Strum Strike and Blow 2022
DESCRIPTION:About Strum Strike and Blow 2022 \nWednesday August 10th 2022 \nStrum\, Strike and Blow is an exciting amalgamation of the ChCh Marimba Festival and ChCh Uke Fest which will feature over 1000  students playing marimbas\, ukuleles.  The Festival is run by Music Education Canterbury and Christchurch Civic Music Council and is in its 8th year and has usually been held in the Christchurch Arena. \nOnce schools have registered they are given access to the music which will generally involve 4-5 individual pieces for ukuleles\, recorders and marimba and a couple of massed items for all three groups of instruments. \nThe music caters for all levels of experience and when performed live at the festival event\, is backed by a professional band. \nWe run workshops for teachers and have plenty of rehearsal material available. \nSchools rehearse together during the day between 9:30am and 2pm then perform together in a 75 minute family-friendly concert on August 10th 2022. from 7pm-8:15pm \nSchools can register for this festival through the registration page

SUMMARY:Wellington Orchestra Festival
DESCRIPTION:A day of orchestral rehearsal and performance led by arranger and conductor\, Richard Oswin\, for primary and intermediate students who can read music and play an instrument. \nThis is an ideal opportunity for students who practice mostly on their own to join other students and make music in one big ensemble. The technical difficulty of the music is suitable for students in their second or third year of practice and while it is an orchestra\, there are kit\, hand percussion\, guitar\, bass\, keyboard\, xylophone and recorder parts. Students can work on their parts with instrumental tutors leading up to the day\, nearly prepared to play up to 6 pieces. Schools might use the repertoire to play in their own ensemble\, but this is not essential. \nThe day begins with a massed rehearsal\, followed by sectionals and finishes with a concert of the 6 pieces. Repertoire ranges from the Baroque to songs from musicals and pop/rock music. \nContact calvertj@scotscollege.school.nz if you have any questions. We’d love to encourage new schools and students to participate in this event. It’s a fine-tuned machine now\, so come and join the fun. \nClick here to register

This allows WeBO participants the options of attending and supporting their performance session\, and also receive valuable tuition and support from our great mentors in workshops at the opposite part of the day. \n  \nAwards\nEvery ensemble performing receives a Platinum\, Gold or Silver participation certificate along with a director’s video containing the adjudicators voice over. WeBO is primarily a participation event\, so no matter your ensembles skill set\, or repertoire\, awards are given on key criteria that encompass all aspects of an ensemble. \n  \nEvening Concert Performances\n\nOn the evenings of the festival we have one WeBO Gala concerts with a combination of professional players\, ensembles and invited WeBO participants. \n  \n*Send questions and registrations to: education@musicworks.co.nz

SUMMARY:Clarinet ZOOM Masterclass with Yvette Audain
DESCRIPTION:Following the success (and fun!) of my clarinet workshop at the recent New Zealand Concert Bands Association (NZCBA) Festival\, and some exceptionally humbling encouragement from participants and band directors\, I’ve decided to host my first ever online workshop.\n\nDuring the first part I will introduce and discuss the many benefits and insights gained through my recent practice in long tones – this isn’t only a musical and technical practice as I’ve been discovering it to be way more holistic than that as a tool for mental and physical wellness.\n\nThis will be followed by an open forum to which I invite you to bring any questions you may have about your playing. Participants are also encouraged to contribute their own answers.\n\nSuitable for all ages and levels\, whether clarinet is your first\, second or umpteenth instrument! If you’ve found yourself teaching it when you haven’t been playing long yourself\, please don’t be shy to bring any questions relevant to that.\n\nThis workshop is also open internationally and while I may not be the number one clarinet expert in all the world\, I bring my own life experience and perspective as a musician\, composer\, teacher and human who has largely lived\, learned and loved life through the clarinet.\n\nPlease email me at audainmusic@gmail.com with your email address to register – I will send the Zoom link in a confirmation email upon receipt of payment.\n\nLooking forward to seeing you there with your clarinet\,\n\nYvette Audain (M.Mus\, GradDipTchg) 🙂\nhttp://www.yvetteaudain.com

SUMMARY:Primary and Secondary Level One - Kodály accredited certificates - Summer School 2023
DESCRIPTION:With James Cuskelly and Lucinda Geoghegan \nThe Kodály approach to music education is based on the understanding that access to music making is a basic human right\, that music education should be fun\, inclusive and musical\, and should be taught in a logical\, experiential sequence. The training is a chance to gain skills in this incredibly effective approach to music education\, while picking up lots of fun games\, songs\, dances and activities to share with children and adults\, and while developing your own musicianship skills. The training is also incredibly useful for community musicians and choir leaders. \nThis course is accredited towards the Australian Kodály Certificate in conjunction with Sound Thinking Australia under the leadership of James Cuskelly. The full certificate is three levels\, achieved over three years. The Muse intends to offer Level Two in 2024. The Kodály training will transform your teaching and you as a musician\, whether you are an experienced music specialist or a classroom teacher wishing to improve your musicianship and confidence teaching music or a musician with no teaching experience. \nWe are also offering two foundation musicianship courses for those with no formal western music training in the lead up to the course\, an online course with Lucinda in term four\, and a weekend in person course with Nikki Berry and Loren Easterbrook also in term four. \nThe 10 Days will cover: \n\nMusicianship: the study of sight-singing\, score reading\, aural perception\, musical dictation and analysis using the tools of the Kodály approach (tonic sol-fa\, rhythm syllables and Curwen hand signs).\n\n\nMethodology: the application of Kodály’s principles to the development of classroom and studio teaching programs that are suitable for Australasian children. It includes the study of: Curriculum development\, Teaching techniques\, Sequencing learning\, Lesson planning and assessment.\n\n\nTeaching techniques is the practical application of teaching strategies covered in Methodology.\n\n\nCultural materials involves learning\, collecting and analysing the folk music of New Zealand and other nations to determine its suitability for pedagogical processes outlined in methodology and its ability to support a developmental music program.\nAbout the Tutors\nDr James Cuskelly OAM is music teacher at St Joseph’s School (Stanthorpe)\, Immediate Past President of the International Kodály Society\, Director of the Summer School Music Program\, Director of the Cuskelly College of Music\, and Adjunct Professor at the University of Queensland (School of Education).James has a very broad base in education\, having taught in Kindergarten\, pre-school\, primary and secondary classrooms as well as in tertiary institutions since 1987. SUMMARY:Te Ika a Māui Resource launch
DESCRIPTION:Kristin Browne introduces her fabulous new resource\, Te Ika a Māui via ZOOM. \nTe Ika a Māui is designed to be an immersive\, interactive and exploratory experience that can be developed over several or multiple lessons for children aged 2-7 years. The learning is experiential and the children will learn by doing. Te Ika a Māui features 6 short recorded songs\, in English and te reo Māori with an accompanying narrative. The songs are designed to be performed with minimal equipment although other instruments can be added. There is space for preschool and lower primary teachers to build upon the resource by creating opportunities to bring the songs out of the constructs of the narrative and become embedded into play. \nThe full resource can be downloaded here. \nClick here for the link to all the videos and tracks for this resource. \nClick here for the ZOOM powerpoint.
