SUMMARY:Luca Ciarla Master Class classical trained string player improv.
DESCRIPTION:Luca Ciarla presents a workshop focusing on the study of jazz and improvisation for string players. The experience gained over many years of teaching in American universities\, in Hong Kong and at the Saint Louis Music College of Rome\, one of the leading jazz schools in Italy\, has brought him to develop an approach which allows classically trained string players to jump into the fascinating world of improvisation. Among violinists and string players in general\, the desire of learning how to improvise is spreading up more and more. \nEthnic and folk traditions such as the Gypsy or the Indian\, jazz music by the great Stéphane Grappelli and the Turtle Island String Quartet or the contemporary creations of Alexander Balanescu and Giovanni Sollima are getting wider attention and are now considered part of the established world of string playing. Luca Ciarla’s master classes and workshops are therefore an opening window on the realm of violin and string improvisation\, through the analysis of several improvisational techniques\, their application on the violin or other string instruments and the study of jazz and several popular traditions that require improvisational skills. Focusing primarily on the constant search for a creative drive\, true goal of any improvising musician\, students will have the chance to develop their own artistic language and their own musical personality. \nRegistration for this workshop $30. Bookings essential\, only 30 spots available. \nVENUE: Irish Society Hall\, 29 Domain Terrace\, Spreydon\nThe hall is situated up the long driveway\, directly next to Domain Park\, and there is plenty of well-lit off-street parking. \nEmail for further details and to book your place: secretary@folkmusic.org.nz or text 027 454 3885

SUMMARY:Unlocking Musical Potential
DESCRIPTION:Workshop for music teachers with highly acclaimed International music educator Michael Griffin\nEver wondered how to motivate your students to practice effectively in order to make real progress?\nKnowing how to practise is the most important skill for musicians. Those who are unable to motivate themselves to apply deliberate practice strategies will lack real progress\, and without progress\, they usually quit. The best predictor of musical progress is the quality and quantity of practice time. Types of repetition\, chunking\, and slow practice are core. How is this taught\, and how can we be certain that students really understand practice? Musical ability is more often considered a genetic disposition than any other ability or human faculty. To what end? Mindsets powerfully impact learning behaviour. Learners with a growth mindset work harder\, embrace challenge\, persist for longer and learn from criticism. Mindset is the most important precept in music education today. It is so important that every music teacher understands the impact their beliefs\, words and actions have on cultivating the learning disposition of students.\nMusic teachers are also welcome to arrive early\, buy lunch/coffee at the café and attend the Music Education short AGM at 12.30pm.

SUMMARY:Teachers' Professional Development Day in Auckland with Dr Robert McWilliams
DESCRIPTION:Friday May 17th \n10am – 4pm\nVenue: East Auckland – Please Contact education@musicworks.co.nz for the specific location. \nTopics include: \n“Strategies and materials for convincing stakeholders on the value of instrumental music learning”\nThis session will cover effective strategies and materials that are persuasive for students\, parents\, administrators\, etc. to support recruitment and retention in instrumental learning. Exciting new developments in research to support this will be shared and identified. \n“Choosing and preparing repertoire that will be rewarding for all – players\, conductors\, and audience” \nThis session will address choosing repertoire that provides the optimum means for developing musicianship and expressive playing. Suggested repertoire and reasons for inclusion will be covered. Effective methods for preparing and studying repertoire will also be addressed including how to study and mark scores to be ready for effective rehearsals. \n“Rehearsal strategies that build musicianship skills and develop your ensemble faster!”\nThis session will explore rehearsal strategies that are focused on getting the players’ ears more involved in the process so that they hear the issues needing to be addressed and can generate solutions that will transfer to other aspects of their playing. SUMMARY:Music Networking Hui
DESCRIPTION:Kia ora koutou e ngā kaiako puoro o Te Ūpoko o te Ika \nI was speaking at the Orff level 1 & 2 course about how lovely the training is for creating a sense of community and connection between teachers\, and seeing the beautiful moments of musical exploration and collaborative creation. When we go out into our own contexts it falls on us alone to create the same sense of magic for our learners\, and it can be a tricky thing to keep doing this\, coming up with new ideas and trying to make the ones you’ve learned work among the challenges of the job. \nIn order to support each other and nurture this community\, you are all very welcome to come along to our next networking hui. Last term we had a wonderful time sharing one or two short activities from our own mahi\, and I think this is a good format to keep up. Thanks to those who participated and contributed their notes to our folder\, it was a very special evening. This time Ann has generously offered to host us at her school: \nMusic Networking Hui\nWednesday 5th June\n3:30 – 5pm\nCardinal McKeefry School\nWilton\, Wellington
