SUMMARY:Wānanga Puoro
DESCRIPTION:  \nWhat: Wānanga Puoro with Makaira Waugh\nWhen: August 31 @ 10:00 am – 1:00 pm\nSector: Primary / Intermediate\nWhere: Te Kura Kaupapa Māori of Te Wānaga Whare Tapere o Takitimu\, Heretaunga\nCost: Free for kura and schools with a MENZA membership\, first year teachers and those currently enrolled in an education degree\, or $30 plus GST for non-members.\nREGISTER HERE TODAY \nMusic and dance hold great potential for learning\, expression and empowerment for our tamariki\, but often kaiako feel they don’t have the skills\, methods or time to teach these subjects. \nAs music specialist kaiako at Te Ara Whānui Kura Kaupapa Māori o ngā Kōhanga Reo o Te Awakairangi I have experienced wonderful success in creating avenues for our ākonga to express themselves through music and dance\, resulting in powerful learning and personal growth. Hauora is a key component of this mahi\, as students learn how to manage their oranga hinengaro\, wairua & whānau to explore and sustain their creativity. \nI am passionate about sharing these teaching approaches with other kaiako so that more of our tamariki can access the benefits of child-centred music education\, and I am organising PD workshops for kaiako in 2019. These are open to any kaiako who are interested in bringing more music and movement into their classroom\, regardless of prior knowledge. They are hands-on\, interactive papamahi delivered in te reo and tikanga Māori where kaiako can: \nPick up a range of practical activities for exploring music in the classroom\nExperience ways to incorporate creative dance into a kaupapa\nUse the power of language to bring it alive through music\nCreate your own musical conversation using percussion instruments \nFor more about this work please check out the Te Ara Whānui sound garden blog.

SUMMARY:The Art and Psychology of Musical Play with Julie Wylie
DESCRIPTION:When: Monday 9th September – 10am – 2:45pm\nWhere: Whanganui Central Baptist Kindergarten\, 285 Wicksteed St\, Whanganui\, 4500\nCost: Free for MENZA members or teachers who are part of an institution that is a MENZA member\, first year teachers and those currently enrolled in an education degree\, or $30+GST for non-members\nREGISTER HERE TODAY \nThe Power of Musical Play \nThe keys to a child’s learning are: \n\nBeing calm and alert (controlled by the lower brain).\nBeing in happy engagement with adults who value and respect them (controlled by the mid brain).\nForming memories (including language\, literacy and numeracy) through experiencing the world (controlled by the mid brain and cortex).\n\nThis workshop is designed to help participants gain an understanding of how music can be used in very specific ways to arouse or calm\, and regulate the brain. Many children in our schools and ECE centres are experiencing anxiety and stress. Musical play activates every part of the brain and promotes healthy brain growth and development. \nParticipants will discover enjoyable ways to: \n\nInteract musically;\nUse the elements of music so that they become a natural part of children’s play;\nUse instructional songs in daily routines;\nMatch children’s energy levels and arouse or calm children through musical play.\n\n  \nThe Art of Musical Play \nMusical play is the child’s first language and is a natural part of the life and culture of children. It opens up an imaginative\, magical world of possibilities. Sensory musical play helps children to listen\, express\, feel\, move and develop a strong sense of self in relation to others. It structures the moment\, helping children to make sense of their world. Musical play can occur inside\, outside\, anywhere\, any time\, and is a wonderful way to support daily routines such as tidying up\, washing hands and learning to start or stop on cue. \nThis workshop will offer many practical ideas about what to include in a musical play session and how to make mat time relevant to young children. It is designed to help participants understand the purpose of group music and musical play\, and how music can support numeracy and literacy. Musical play can weave all the strands of learning together and provides the warp and weft of the Early Childhood Curriculum\, Te Whāriki. \n  \nJulie was awarded the MNZM last year for services to Music Education and Musical Play Therapy and has presented numerous  workshops in New Zealand and overseas. Julie is a former Early Childhood Music Advisor for The Ministry of Education and lecturer in Early Childhood Development at the Christchurch College of Education. \n

SUMMARY:Lower Hutt - Sharing the joy of music with kids- teachers' & carers' workshop
DESCRIPTION:Because Arohanui Strings passionately believe that all children deserve the opportunity to participate in music-making every day\, we are offering a FREE teacher workshop this term. The object is to help all teachers and caregivers enjoy simple music-making with their tamariki\, using minimal props and technology. Music is a great tool to encourage empathy\, pro-social behaviour and classroom skills like listening\, making a circle\, taking turns etc. We have developed a valuable resource for teachers of the 5-8 age group\, The Alphabet Songbook. Our workshop will be based on this book and how to use it in the classroom for joyful movement\, as well as building literacy and numeracy through music. Check it out here: www.alphabetsongbook.nz Books will be available for sale on the day. \nWhere: Kawakawa room\, Stokes Valley Community Hub\, Lower Hutt\nWho: all teachers\, teacher aides\, and caregivers of junior primary school (approx up to age 8)\, especially those who feel they “can’t sing”. \n \nArohanui Strings-Sistema Hutt Valley is sponsoring a unique PD event for teachers and caregivers of young children. We have been teaching music in the Hutt Valley for nine years\, providing quality youth orchestra classes with instruments provided\, all free of charge to children age 6 and up. In addition to our after-school orchestra\, we have also visited classrooms in the northern Hutt schools regularly\, working with whole classes and their teachers.
