SUMMARY:MENZA Conference Online: Bigger\, Better\, Brains - Music education and brain development with Dr Anita Collins
DESCRIPTION:Dr Anita Collins is an award-winning educator\, researcher and writer in the field of brain development and music learning. Anita is best known for her role as on-screen expert and campaign lead for the ‘Don’t Stop the Music’ documentary that aired on the ABC in late 2018 and author of ‘The Music Advantage’. She is internationally recognized for her unique work in translating the scientific research of neuroscientists and psychologists to the everyday parent\, teacher and student. Anita brings a wealth of experience as an active educator to every presentation. She is an experienced classroom teachers and conductor (Canberra Grammar School)\, has been musical director for three award winning productions and she has over a decade of experience as a teacher educator across all areas of tertiary education (University of Canberra and the Australian National University). \nNeuroscience and psychology researchers have done extensive studies over the last 20 years to understand how the brain processes music and why music learning seems to be such a cognitively unique activity. Musically trained children have better language and communication skills\, can focus for longer and are more likely to stick with difficult problems until they solve them\, they are able to control their own emotional responses and understand emotional responses of others and they have significantly better working and long-term memory systems. These enhancements then support higher levels of overall academic achievement\, motivation\, stress management\, self-regulation and awareness. Most notably\, music learning has been found to improve neural communication issues associated with autism\, ADHD\, dyslexia and reading and language learning delays. DESCRIPTION:Both Matt and Martin contributed to four ‘classroom projects’ – comprehensive and engaging music teaching resources that are freely available on ableton.com as part of the Ableton for the Classroom Initiative which includes free copies of Ableton Live 11. In this workshop\, Matt will delve into these classroom projects\, explaining their intention and development. He will then demonstrate some of the techniques used in the projects and explain how he has used them to engage his students in music learning\, recording\, composition and performance. Martin will provide NZ curriculum and assessment context for effectively integrating Ableton Live in your classroom. \nMatt Ridgway is a multi-faceted musician and educator from Melbourne\, Australia. SUMMARY:MENZA Conference Online: Curriculum design with Dr Graham McPhail
DESCRIPTION:Making deep connections within and across our curriculum: an approach to curriculum design\, with Dr Graham McPhail. \nOne way in which the hauora of our ākonga can be nourished at school is through providing opportunities for deep conceptual learning. This workshop session responds to the call for deep learning and the development of critical thinking in music education – two catch-cries of the 21st century learning narrative. I will provide some examples of curriculum design and pedagogy that have been developed using the CDC Model – a model aimed at bringing about curriculum design coherence for deep learning – and then will work with participants using the model to design a topic or lesson. The aim of the workshop is to increase our awareness of the importance of our design competencies and the impact this can have on student learning. While examples shared will deal with typical western music topics\, the potential for the model to be used through a bi-cultural lens will also be explored. \nDr Graham McPhail is a senior lecturer in the School of Curriculum and Pedagogy\, in the Faculty of Education and Social Work\, at the University of Auckland\, New Zealand. He took up this position in 2015 after twenty years of work in the secondary education sector including three years as the National Moderator for NCEA Music. His current research is centred on the role of knowledge in the curriculum\, in particular within C21schooling and music education contexts. Along with Dr Vicki Thorpe and Dr Stuart Wise he edited New Zealand’s first volume on secondary school music education Educational Change and the Secondary School Music Curriculum in Aotearoa New Zealand published by Routledge  in 2018. \nThis workshop is free and you don’t have to be a MENZA member to participate. Using a relatively new (major updates occurred at the start of this year) NZ-created software\, by the DJ company Serato. Co-hosted by Martin Emo\, this workshop outlines possible different pathway for how to teach producers (or budding producers). This workshop will demonstrate two or three different ways that students can make a track from scratch with the world-wide producer DJ OP! currently based in New York. SUMMARY:MENZA Conference Online: Piano Pedagogy in High School
DESCRIPTION:The focus of this workshop is teaching NCEA Piano Performance and teaching students who have little or no prior piano learning. \nFacilitated by Stephanie and Susan (Sue)\, this workshop is for itinerant piano teachers\, most particularly those from lower decile schools where students with this background are particularly prevalent. We will examine best practice and achievable outcomes for students coming into NCEA performance standards often without even the requisite 2-3 years of ITM piano education. We will look specifically at student-focussed repertoire that assists accelerated rather than sequential learning in piano (Anime and Game music\, youtube offerings – creating your own channel\, Fur Elise and “other top of the pops’). Then we will investigate successful methods to assist improved technique in older beginners\, non-music-readers and those with no keyboards at home\, or when on ZOOM… modelling\, using chord recognition and hand shapes. The aim of the workshop is also to build a support group for participants and a common repertoire database. \nSue and Stephanie both have many years of working in schools and particularly with Pasifika and Māori students. Keyboard & Piano are among the most presented of the instrumental standards and yet there are few exemplars (3) given by NZQA currently so we have been in touch with the moderator\, Delysse\, for advice which we would like to share. \nThis workshop is free to attend and you don’t need to be a MENZA member. She teaches Suzuki piano\, marimba\, ukulele\, recorder\, choir\, chimes\, Kodaly and Orff Schulwerk for children and adults at home\, in local schools and in the community.\n \nHer past involvement with ONZA (Orff NZ Aotearoa) saw her organizing workshops\, annual marimba festivals and marimba camps for many years. Clare has led workshops for teachers and children in NZ and Australia in Orff Schulwerk and ukulele.

DESCRIPTION:DUE TO COVID-19 RESTRICTIONS\, THIS EVENT IS TO BE POSTPONED\, DETAILS TO BE CONFIRMED \nA day of orchestral rehearsal and performance led by arranger and conductor\, Richard Oswin\, for senior primary\, intermediate and secondary students who learn an instrument. \nThis is an ideal opportunity for students who practise mostly on their own to join other students and make music in one big ensemble. The technical difficulty of the music is suitable for students in their second or third year of practice and while it is an orchestra\, there are kit\, guitar\, keyboard and bass parts too. Students can work on their parts with instrumental tutors to attend on the day\, nearly prepared to play up to 6 pieces. Schools might achieve an ensemble of instruments who can play together but this is not essential. \nThe day begins with a massed rehearsal and sectionals\, and finishes with a concert of the 6 pieces. Repertoire ranges from the Baroque to modern pop/rock music. \nPlease be in touch with your questions. We’d love to increase the range of schools with students participating in this event.
