She is Pākehā and in October 2022\, made the leap to self-employment. The primary focus of her work is working alongside communities and organisations as they seek to both respond well and prevent all forms of sexual harm including sexual harassment in workplaces and child sexual abuse. \nImmediately prior to self-employment life\, Mel worked at the New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF). Initially this was as one of their small team of regionally based Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Advisors (SAPRAs) and then as the Manager for the SAPRAs. \nPrior to the NZDF Mel worked for the most part in NGOs who have a focus on the response to sexual harm\, including WellStop and the Wellington Sexual Abuse HELP Foundation. \nShe enjoys being able to take prior learning and adapt that in order to be able to support  organisations which have taken on the challenge of creating safer and respectful environments. \n  \nRachel Harrison (she/they) \nRachel Harrison comes from the Coromandel Peninsula and currently lives in Te Whanganui a Tara (Wellington) and works with organisations and communities across Aotearoa to help prevent sexual harassment\, sexual violence\, domestic violence and child abuse. \nRachel believes that harassment\, violence and abuse are preventable and that the best solutions are tailored to each specific community and workplace\, making use of their strengths and minimising specific risk factors. \nRachel started at Auckland Rape Crisis in the 1990’s\, and since then has worked at Netsafe\, the Hauraki Family Violence Network and Child Abuse Prevention Services Hauraki. She is now self-employed and works with a range of public and private sector organisations including the New Zealand Defence Force\, New Zealand Rugby\, the screen sector\, performance sector and music community as they work toward making their communities safe and free from harassment and abuse. \n

SUMMARY:NZ Musicological Society Conference - Call for papers
DESCRIPTION:CALL FOR PAPERS \n2024 Annual Meeting of the New Zealand Musicological Society \nMusicology Matters Today Saturday 7th — Monday 9th December\, 2024 \nNew Zealand School of Music—Te Kōkī\,\nTe Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington \nKeynote address: Emeritus Professor Peter Walls\nPublic concert opportunity: Orchestra Wellington\, “A Modern Hero” \nDeadline for proposals: Sunday 26th May\, 2024 \nThe past few years have been challenging for musicology in New Zealand and around the world. This conference aims to affirm the importance of musicology and establish credible pathways for its future. \nQuestions related to the conference theme might include: \n\nHow is musicology in Aotearoa promoting knowledge and rewards for performers\,composers\, and listeners?\nHow can tertiary music programmes articulate their worth in non-financial terms?\nWhat new pedagogical and research approaches might widen musicology’s appeal and contribution?\nHow is musicology moving forward in its research involving place\, race and gender?\nHow might musicology’s engagement with the past be reconceptualised in forward-looking terms?\nHow is musicology building its relevance to other musical and broader disciplines and practices? How can these relationships be deepened?\nWhat challenges does musicology face in an increasingly digital and online world\, especially given the social and physical foundations of music and its performance?\n\nAll music research is welcome\, with a suggested coda of commentary or points of meta- cognition allied with any of the conference questions. We also welcome abstracts from disciplines outside of music where the paper has a music focus and relevance to the conference theme. \nConference presentations may take the following forms: \n\nFormal conference papers (20 minutes\, plus 10 minutes for questions and discussion)\nInteractive workshops (30 minutes)\nLecture recitals and demonstrations (20 minutes\, plus 10 minutes for questions anddiscussion)\nPanel sessions (30 minutes per participant. May be proposed by applicants or academic committee.)\n\nThis year’s conference will be live and in-person. Abstracts of no more than 250 words should be sent in PDF format to conference point of contact\, Hamish Robb: hamish.robb@vuw.ac.nz (deadline: 26th May\, 2024) \nProposals for panel sessions should include abstracts for individual papers (where applicable) as well as a proposal for the overall session. The submitted file should have a filename as follows: LASTNAME_first_few_words_of_title.pdf \nPlease include a title and up to five keywords beneath your abstract. Please omit your name and other identifying information from the text of your document. In the body of the email\, include your full name\, status (academic staff\, postgraduate student\, independent scholar\, etc.) and institutional affiliation where appropriate\, and your place of residence. \nDetails for the student paper competition will be announced shortly. \nThe academic committee consists of:\nHamish Robb (Victoria University of Wellington)\,\nChair Peter Adams (University of Otago)\nAllan Badley (University of Auckland)\nNick Braae (Waikato Institute of Technology)\nGregory Camp (University of Auckland)\nSunhee Koo (University of Auckland)\nNancy November (University of Auckland)\nPolly Sussex (Independent Scholar\, Auckland)\nFrancis Yapp (University of Canterbury)

SUMMARY:MENZA 2024 AGM and Workshops
DESCRIPTION:1.30-2.30 Workshops \n2.30-3pm Afternoon tea \n3-4.30pm AGM \nWe would appreciate your RSVP so that we know how many people to expect and to organise the afternoon tea 🙂 \nWorkshop 1: NCEA 1.1 Use music skills in a music style Workshop \nIn this workshop\, we will unpack how to assess NCEA Music 1.1\, Use music skills in a music style\, and prepare students for the assessment. \nRSVP for workshop \nWorkshop 2: Taonga Puoro Workshop \nThis workshop will look at how to create Taonga Puoro using clay. The workshop will be facilitated by Rapua Timoti\, Trevania Walbaekken and Ben Lau. Suitable for Kaiako teaching at all levels. \nRSVP for workshop \nAGM: Agenda \nZOOM link \n  \nProposed changes to MENZA \nDue to the Incorporated Societies Act 2022\, MENZA (Music Education New Zealand Aotearoa) has to update its Constitution. The Board has been working hard on this with the assistance of Maude and Miller and is asking the membership to adopt the new constitution at the next AGM. \nThe draft constitution was first presented to the membership at last year’s AGM\, and feedback was received. Another draft version was presented at the Special General Meeting in Oct 2023\, where more thorough feedback was sought. SUMMARY:MENZA WOF 2024 (Wellington Orchestra Festival)
DESCRIPTION:A day of orchestral rehearsal and performance for Primary and Intermediate-aged students who can read music and play an instrument. \nWOF 2024 is happening as a precursor to MEFA at the end of Term 3. A huge thanks to Wellington College and Musicworks for supporting the 2024 festival. \nWe have six pieces arranged by Richard Oswin\, ranging from classical favourites to film scores and pop hits. \nThis is an ideal opportunity for students who practice mostly on their own to join other students and make music as an ensemble. The technical difficulty of the music is suitable for students in their second or third year of learning onwards. Along with the four orchestra sections\, there are parts for drum kit\, hand percussion\, guitar\, bass\, keyboard\, Orff xylophone and recorders. Students can work on their parts with instrumental tutors leading up to the day\, preparing to play all six pieces. Schools are also welcome to use the repertoire in their own ensembles during the year. \nWOF is conducted by Mike Ashton. The day begins with a massed rehearsal\, followed by sectionals led by musicians from Orchestra Wellington and finishes with a concert of the six pieces\, which whanau can attend. The concert will also include a guest performance by Orchestra Wellington musicians. \nSchools registered for WOF will also get the opportunity to take part in Orchestra Wellington’s Education in Schools Programme – Orchestra Wellington will come to your school to help prepare your students! Schools registered for WOF can sign up for this by contacting Hannah Neman. \nContact Joanna Calvert if you have any questions. We encourage new schools and students to participate in this event… come and join the fun. Sign up for WOF using the link below and then you will get sent the sheet music to start practising! \nRegister here. \nMENZA members $100 per school\nnon-MENZA members $130 (includes membership to MENZA).\nInvoices will be sent on registration.

SUMMARY:SECRET SONG - MEC celebrates 50 years
DESCRIPTION:You are invited to a movie night\nMonday September 30th (the start of the school break!) \n  \nas Music Education Canterbury (MEC) celebrates 50 years 1974-2024 \n5:15pm mix and mingle \n6pm “The Secret Song” (brought back to show in NZ by popular request) \nTickets available from lumierecinemas.co.nz/movie/the-secret-song \n$10 tickets (MEC/MENZA price) \n$20 full price \n  \nAbout the movie \nFor over four decades\, Doug Goodkin nurtured the innate musicality in children as a pre-k through 8th grade music teacher in San Francisco. Dropping in on what would turn out to be a tumultuous final year of teaching\, “The Secret Song” gives an intimate view into Goodkin’s teaching approach\, the vibrant impact it has on students and alumni\, and the value of musical improvisation in navigating real-world challenges. \nA lifelong musician\, Goodkin “loved learning\, but hated school.” He seeks to teach children differently than the traditional lessons he was raised with. After a chance exposure with an alternative approach to music education in college\, Goodkin would devote his life to teaching music in an accessible and enjoyable way. Goodkin’s time-tested methods are thrown into disarray as the COVID-19 pandemic forces the school into remote learning three months before Goodkin’s planned retirement. A program which once prioritized group-learning\, movement\, dance\, and instilling music “through the ear\, not through the eye” has to adapt to an online format. Goodkin’s close colleagues and friends\, James Harding and Sofia Lopez-Ibor\, who will take over the music program in his wake\, share his heartbreak at the possibility he will not get a proper send off.

SUMMARY:NZ Ukulele Trust Songwriting competition
DESCRIPTION:Uke-Can-Do-It-for-MENZA \nThe New Zealand Ukulele Trust invites all Year 5-13 students in NZ to enter our songwriting competition which closes on Friday 1st November 2024.  With time running out quickly and school holidays around the corner\, we are asking Head of Music Departments (or any lead teacher who can talk to the appropriate age groups for their school) to share this competition with their students.  Students do not need to be in a ‘Kiwilele’ school to enter. There may be budding vocalists\, poets and musicians who aren’t experienced in the ukulele\, but who may be able to submit an amazing song with basic chord progressions that would suit beginner ukulele players. \nFurther details can be found on our website:  https://www.nzukulele.org.nz/uke-can-do-it.html and the attached flyer which we would appreciate if you could share either in school newsletters\, assemblies or in class. \nThank you for any support you can give us in encouraging the imagination and creativity of your tamariki through this musical competition. \nNga mihi\, \nSean Dean \nNew Zealand Ukulele Trust.

SUMMARY:Working with Neurodiverse Students
DESCRIPTION:Yiyi Ku and Julie Wylie Sunday 23rd March\, 2.30pm – 5.00pm\nThe Village\, 362a Ilam Road\, Bryndwr \n$20 IRMTNZ members \n$30 Non members \nPlease register using the link below. \n Working with Neurodiverse Students \nThe neurodiversity paradigm is a framework for understanding human brain function that considers the diversity within sensory processing\, motor abilities\, social comfort\, cognition\, and focus as neurobiological differences. This diversity falls on a spectrum of neurocognitive differences. The neurodiversity paradigm argues that diversity in neurocognition is part of humanity and that some neurodivergences generally classified as disorders\, such as autism\, are differences with strengths and weaknesses as well as disabilities that are not necessarily pathological. Neurotypical individuals are those who fall within the average range of functioning and thinking. 2.30 – 3.00 Yiyi Ku – My Journey with Kodi Lee – How I became his piano teacher\, how I taught him\, and what teaching him has taught me.\n3pm Afternoon tea break\n3.30 – 5.00 Julie Wylie – Working with Neurodiverse students\nJulie will talk briefly about the neuroscience of musical play\, key aspects of understanding the sensory needs of a person with neuro-diversity and how teachers can adapt their music to suit their students’ needs.\nJulie will then present three case studies of children on the spectrum. Each one is very different but provides a clear understanding of how music can be used to help these children to make sense of their world and to restore order from what is often a very unpredictable and chaotic world.\nShe will then give short interactive improvised examples with other players on the keyboard showing ways that teachers can play alongside their students\, giving rhythmic and melodic support to whatever the student creates.\nJulie will then show us some simple improvisational techniques of how she has supported students she has worked with over the years at the Champion Centre. \nYiyi Ku is a pianist and teacher. She grew up in Christchurch\, studied with Maurice Till and Deidre Irons\, and received a Master of Music with Distinction from University of Canterbury. After graduating\, she taught piano at Rangi Ruru and St Margaret’s College\, before moving to the US in 2005. Yiyi also holds LRSM\, Permanent Certification from Music Teachers National Association (USA)\, and Advanced Certification from Royal Conservatory of Music (Canada). While living in the US\, Yiyi pursued extensive professional development\, attending numerous state and national conventions on piano pedagogy\, teacher training courses\, including Dalcroze Institute at The Juilliard School\, as well as private lessons with master teachers. She was also an active collaborative pianist\, and was Principal Pianist at Temecula Valley Symphony Orchestra for many years. One of Yiyi’s former students is NZ composer Salina Fisher. Most recently\, Yiyi has taught another world famous student – Kodi Lee\, a blind and autistic musical savant who won America’s Got Talent. Yiyi moved back to Christchurch with her husband and daughter in 2022. She continues to teach many US students online and has a thriving local studio. \nREGISTER HERE
