DESCRIPTION:The premier event for young jazz musicians – come and spend a week in Wellington learning from some of the best jazz educators in New Zealand and guest artist John Riley \nThe New Zealand Jazz Foundation provides exceptional musical experiences to young jazz musicians in New Zealand. The National Jazz Workshops bring New Zealand’s enthusiastic jazz students together with top jazz musicians and educators\, working on instrument techniques\, improvisation\, theory\, listening and ensemble performances. \nStudents 19 and under with at least one year of experience on an instrument\, are eligible. \nFaculty for 2018 will include: Dave Lisik (coordinator\, theory\, improvisation)\, Rodger Fox (trombone and big band)\, Nick Granville (guitar)\, Lance Philip (drums) \nDirectors: Rodger Fox and Dr. David Lisik \nThe NZ Jazz Workshops will be held at the New Zealand School of Music\, Victoria University of Wellington. \nACCOMMODATION: students will be responsible for their own accommodation. \nMEALS: Lunch for the five days will be available for purchase at several locations on campus. SUMMARY:ONZA 2018 Summer Workshop
DESCRIPTION:This movement/music workshop will offer participants the opportunity to engage with Māori legend/story using processes involving dance and music. Participants will explore ways of integrating the elements of dance from the NZ Curriculum with Maori dance movements associated with haka\, poi and waiata ringa. A range of contemporary NZ music will be used to inspire this dance work. \nPresenters\n\nLiz Melchior: Liz is dance lecturer in the School of Education at Victoria University of Wellington\, New Zealand\, where she teaches in early childhood and secondary initial teacher education programmes. An experienced primary school teacher\, Liz was a writer for the dance curriculum\, providing professional development programmes for teachers implementing dance in the classroom. In recognition of her services to dance in education\, Liz was recently awarded a life membership of the New Zealand Dance Subject Association (NZDSA) \n \nPriya Gain: Priya is currently completing a Masters of Education specialising in music and arts education at the University of Waikato. She teaches at Eastern Hutt School as music/movement specialist across the whole school. She has completed ONZA certificated training up to Level 4 in the Aotearoa/New Zealand context. She has a strong commitment to the development of local teaching resources which express the bicultural identity of this country. DESCRIPTION:Music Education day in the Bay Of Plenty!!!\nSuitable for teachers\, music teachers\, itinerant teachers.\nParticularly for Primary educators / ECE / Early High School. \nThis workshop will offer a day of music-making\, involving the voice\, movement and classroom instruments which acknowledges the bi-cultural identity of Aotearoa\, New Zealand. Participants will take away new skills\, new understandings\, some exciting new material\, and have the confidence to make theirs a more musical classroom. \nPresenters\nDr. Millie Locke\nwill demonstrate approaches fully applicable in the modern classroom to enhance music and literacy with young children. Using a thematic approach she will use story to fully engage every child\, and encourage them to use their unique voice in artistic and holistic learning experiences. Millie explored teaching as artistry in her Masters thesis and will inspire musicians and teachers alike in their craft. \nMaria Kappa\nhas many years’ experience in music education\, is Kodaly trained and has recently developed an interest in the Orff approach. Many of the musicians in the big band hold positions in major teaching institutions\, including the New Zealand School of Music and many High Schools. \nRodger Fox \nRodger Fox is New Zealand’s foremost jazz trombonist\, big band leader\, jazz educator\, arranger and producer. He is also the Artistic Director for a number of jazz festivals around the country. \nOver the years Rodger has performed with some of the biggest names in jazz – blues and commercial music including Michael Brecker\, Diane Schuur\, Joey Defrancesco\, Mike Stern\, Randy Crawford\, Michael Houstoun\, Charlie Musselwhite\, Robben Ford\, Chris Cain\, Jon Papenbrook\, Dee Bridgewater\, Steve Smith\, Tom Warrington\, Larry Knoose\, Joe LaBarbara\, John Fedchock\, Clay Jenkins\, Eric Marienthal\,  Bill Cunliffe\, Steve Houghton\, Dick Oatts\, Alex Sipiagin\, Bob Sheppard\, Bruce Forman\, Charley Davis\, Denise Perrier\, Alan Broadbent and Jim Pugh …….to name but a few. \nConcert featured guest artists from the USA \nRobben Ford – Guitar/Vocalist \nAmerican blues\, jazz\, and rock guitarist. He was a member of the L.A. Critics have compared her style to powerful singers including Janis Joplin\, Aretha Franklin\, and Teena Marie.. \nThe guest artists add a new dimension and expose the students to different styles of jazz and a different level of mastery. \nWhat will students be doing?\n \nThe group of artists will spend time in each city to present educational workshops during the day\, followed by a concert at night. The concert will be attended by students as well as the general public. \nGiving students and teachers exposure to world-class educators and performers in this way gives them an insight into the level required to perform internationally\, as well as a greater understanding of jazz concepts and artistry. \nWorkshop format \n 1.30 – 2.15pm General introduction. \nRodger Fox Big Band to open the workshop by performing a swing style chart. Discussion will then take place to show what it takes to play in this style of ensemble. Each section of the big band will demonstrate their parts within the arrangement and will then put it \nall together. She is also is a mentor for MusicEdNet (Music Technology). Her work developing ways to integrate music learning with the new Digital Technologies Curriculum has led to workshop opportunities in Australia\, Lithuania\, USA\, Scotland and Switzerland. \nProfessor Tim Bell \nTim Bell is a professor in the Department of Computer Science and Software Engineering at the University of Canterbury. His “Computer Science Unplugged” project is widely used internationally. Tim has received many awards for his work in education including the international 2018 SIGCSE Award for Outstanding Contribution to Computer Science Education. Since 2008 he has been actively involved in the design and deployment of the Digital Technologies Curriculum in New Zealand schools. SUMMARY:ASQ International Music Academy 2018 - Applications close 15 April
DESCRIPTION:Applications are now open for the 2018 ASQ International Music Academy\, which will take place from 23-28 July at St Andrew’s on The Terrace in Wellington. Participants can enrol for either the full six-day course\, or a shorter version running Thursday to Saturday.\n\n\nThe e-flyer\, brochure and application form for 2018 Academy can be downloaded from www.arohaquartet.co.nz/asq-academy-2018.\n\n\n\n\nThe ASQ Academy is ideal for student and adult non-professional string players and pianists of a minimum standard of Grade VI. A maximum of three pianists will be accepted\, for the full course only. Participants receive chamber music and string orchestra coaching\, take part in masterclasses\, sectionals\, informal concerts\, social events\, and the final concert on the Saturday evening. There will also be public lunchtime concerts for particpants and tutors.\n\n\n\n\nGuest tutors are: pianist Emma Sayers (formerly lecturer at Massey University Conservatorium of Music and the New Zealand School of Music)\, violinist Donald Armstrong (NZSO Associate Concertmaster)\, cellist Ken Ichinose (NZSO Associate Principal Cello)\, double bassist Joan Perarnau Garriga (NZSO Principal Double Bass) and chamber music coach Brian Shillito (former NZSO Sub-Principal Viola).\n\n\n\n\nApplications close on Sunday 15 April.

There is flexibly within the day to specifically address questions that attendees have\, including trouble shooting your problems. You are encouraged to bring your laptop/devices.  Follow up visits are also proposed to support local schools free of charge on Thursday 2 and Friday 3 August.  Please indicate on the form whether you would like a visit. \nPhil Pegler\, will be the facilitator for the day. He is currently NZ Manager for Music EDnet\, and previously HOD Performing Arts NaeNae College. He has a Masters in Education: MIDI composition systems\, recently completed a PG Cert. (Digital and Collaborative Learning) and is passionate about increasing student engagement & making life easier for teachers.  He taught Media\, Film and Sound\, including Production Sound Recording (National Cert)\, alongside Music and has been known to moonlight as DJ\, Sound Engineer/Producer and Production Manager.  He is on the Music Education New Zealand Aotearoa (MENZA) Board. \nMartin Emo is currently HOD Performing Arts at Waimea College\, TKI Musicnet Community Facilitator\, NZQA Exam/digital consultant NZQA\, EDnet Australaisan Music Technology Mentor. Martin is currently completing a Masters in ELearning looking at digital exams and coding. For the last 6 years\, he has taught a multilevel Music Technology and Performing Arts full year subject. He also has worked in Digital Technology sales\, and performs live electronic music. \nIt is proposed that an on-line forum for discussing issues and sharing resources be set up to encourage ongoing support and interaction.  A key goal is that this micro – community will be driven by peer-to-peer interactions and become self-sustaining over time. \nOutline\n9:30am – 10am Introductions\, overview\, goals.\n10am -12pm Session One.
