She is a sought after international soloist\, chamber musician and orchestral player. She has a Masters in Music from the Juilliard School in New York and is currently studying at the Royal College of Music in London. \nShe enjoys challenging the boundaries of classical music with her pursuits of composition\, singing\, improvisation\, new music\, historical performance and music technology. Recent awards include the Pultron Composites Award for the best performance of a New Zealand Work (Salina Fisher’s “Reflect”) at the Gisborne International Music Competition and an Award from the Yamaha Foundation of Europe. \nDuring the summer of 2015\, Bryony toured with Chamber Music New Zealand as a member of the Turnovsky Jubilee Ensemble\, celebrating the 50th anniversary of the organisation’s Chamber Music Contest. Highlights of summer 2016 include IMS Prussia Cove Open Chamber Music\, Music From Angel Fire and the London Sinfonietta Academy. DESCRIPTION:Wednesday 12 April 9:15am – 2:45pm\nWURM –  Wellington Ukulele\, Recorder and Marimba Festival\nRegistrations for this event have now closed.\n$60 MENZA members\, $90 incl. membership for non-MENZA members\nMaungaraki School\, Dowse Drive\, Maungaraki\, Lower Hutt \nPlease note\, registrations for this event have now closed.\nThe WURM festival is intended for senior primary and intermediate students but older and younger students can also join in. This festival is in its fourth year so the momentum is mounting. We would love to welcome new schools to these and can assist in preparations so please be in touch.\nWURM is a friendly music festival for ukulele\, recorder and marimba players at senior primary and intermediate levels. Music is shared prior to the event for students and teachers to practise and prepare. There are 4-5 pieces to learn though there is no expectation of 100% readiness by anyone. On the day\, we workshop together and in sections to present a final concert of instrumental and massed items. Supported by Shane McAlister of  The Ukulele Institute and experienced local music teachers\, this event runs like a dream and is a pleasure every year.

Are you seeking ways of bringing great singing and movement back into the classroom? This workshop will show you how using the Kodaly method to teach singing\, moving and dancing which will ignite a real love of singing tunefully in your classes. \nTaking the Stigma Away from Theory \nwith Judith Bell \n A fun interactive workshop where we get to try out the games and activities that make theory so popular at year 6-9 level as well as discussing the strategies and resources for running an after school theory club. Although much of the workshop is “unplugged” the workshop also covers some engaging ways technology is used in the club. \nQuirky Choir \nwith Heather Libeau-Dow \nThis year I take Junior and Senior choir in a large primary school; and a choir for 5-12 year olds in a very small school. These are for “all-comers”  and the challenge is to deliver sessions that are energetic and captivating. \nThe voice in the body is the vehicle for expression; there is emphasis on good posture\, connected breathing and great diction. As repertoire is the key to success\, a wide range of material is carefully selected; including engaging NZ compositions and songs from around the world. Orff Schulwerk processes are evident throughout-incorporating vocal exploration\, movement \, rounds and improvisation. \nThis workshop is geared to teachers responsible for primary choirs and classroom/assembly singing. Reflection and discussion around developing positive choir culture will conclude this session. \nSing\, Dance and Play with Juniors \nwith Celia Stewart \nThis workshop will incorporate a range of great ideas that will empower all teacher to introduce music activities in to their daily programme. Using speech rhymes as the motivator we will explore singing\, moving\, and playing experiences that will engage young children. The main elements of music\, beat\, rhythm\, dynamics\, pitch\, tempo and tone colour will be experienced in simple ways that all teachers can enjoy with their students. \n  \nThe Presenters \n Kate Husband – I have been teaching in classes for the past twenty years. I work in year 1-6 classes throughout the school week and teach two choirs for the Christchurch School of Music on Saturdays. I have been trained in Level 1 Orff and am part way through learning the Level 1 Kodaly method. I grew up off and on on the West Coast and am lucky enough to spend many holidays each year in Okarito – my favourite place. I am passionate about keeping the art of music alive in our classrooms and in providing manageable ways for teachers to explore these too. \nJudith Bell –Judith Bell has run the Chisnallwood Intermediate School music programme since 1999\, which provides instrumental and vocal lessons\, she and directs performance music groups such as all-comers-orchestra\, Jazz\, Irish and rock\, theory club\, computer music and sound tech training. Prior to Chisnallwood\, Judith taught early childhood music classes and was an itinerant and private music teacher. She also does arranging and transcribing work. Judith played in the band Barock for over 25 years and now plays in 2 Big Bands. She is a music director for Christchurch’s Strum Strike and Blow Festival for ukuleles\, marimbas and recorders\, and involved in Junior Jazz Jam (for Primary school jazz bands) and the Christchurch Big Band Festival. She is co-chair of Music Education Canterbury\, is on the MENZA board and has recently become a MusicEdNet mentor looking especially at computational thinking and music learning as the new digital technologies curriculum is implemented in NZ. Other workshop topics Judith delivers include “Successfully Using Diverse instruments in a performance group” and “Easy jazz style and improvisation tips”. \nHeather Libeau-Dow After general classroom teaching Heather specialised in primary music for eleven years then lectured at the University of Canterbury – College of Education for another eleven years. Currently she has an interesting mix combining both areas – appraising College of Education primary teacher trainees on school placements; delivering choir/ class music programmes in two Christchurch schools and teaching singing from her private studio. Her Orff Schulwerk journey started more than a decade ago with VOSA Levels 1 and 2 in Melbourne; later completing the University of Waikato Post Graduate qualification and recently Level 4  in Hamilton with inspirational Orff educator Mary Helen Solomon from Florida. Heater’s practice is strongly influenced by on-going training in Orff-Schulwerk. In line with contemporary educational pedagogy\, this creative child centred approach scaffolds musical experiences through experiential learning. Integrating language\, movement and playing\, musical skills and concepts are explored in positive environment. \nCelia Stewart Celia has been involved in music education for many years as a primary and early childhood teacher\, lecturer in Early Childhood at the Christchurch College of Education\, primary music adviser in Canterbury with UC EdPlus at the University of Canterbury and National Facilitator in Primary Music for the Ministry of Education. She is Music Director at the Christchurch School of Music and regularly facilitates workshops for teachers\, works in schools as a specialist music teacher\, manages music events and writes resources. Celia is a flute and recorder player\, is co-director of the Strum Strike and Blow festival\, immediate past president of both Music Education Canterbury and Music Education NZ Aotearoa\, co-director of the upcoming MENZA conference in Auckland and closely involved with the Christchurch Big Band Festival. She has a Masters in Education specializing in the Orff Schulwerk approach to music education through Waikato University.
