We all know singing is good for us on so many levels. We also know that music educators often neglect their own music making because they are so busy developing it in their students. This is the rationale behind forming the first ever Aotearoa Teachers’ Choir. Like many of us, you may not have time to be part of an ensemble that rehearses regularly but would like a rewarding musical experience. The Aotearoa Teachers’ Choir will only require one day of your time and hopes to rejuvenate your musical spirit!

REGISTER HERE for the Aotearoa Teachers’ Choir
We will learn some core repertoire and finish with a casual performance for friends and family. We may look at public performances in the future such as the Auckland Art Gallery. We are not quite sure what direction this ensemble will take as yet – but together we will find out!
Don’t miss this wonderful chance to nourish your soul with a day of uplifting choral singing with your colleagues in music education.
The Start-up Goals of the Aotearoa Teachers’ Choir
- The choir will provide an opportunity for music educators to enjoy choral singing in a collaborative, encouraging and relaxed environment
- The choir will develop musicianship, repertoire knowledge and musical leadership
- The choir will promote vocal health, develop individual singing technique and confidence in conducting
- The directorship of this choir will be fluid and collaborative and there will be opportunities in the future for members to lead.
- An accompanist will be engaged and instrumentalists within the choir will be utilised for accompaniment where appropriate.
- The future direction of the choir will be decided in consultation with the choir’s membership.
Repertoire
Music will be selected from a range of styles and genres and will be achievable and rewarding. S A T B or S A B, depending on the vocal range of members. No homework required as it is assumed members will be able to read basic notation.
Meet the Directors 2016
We are delighted to announce an outstanding team of choral directors for the very first Aotearoa Teachers’ Choir:
Karen Grylls, David Squire and Megan Flint are leading choral directors at tertiary, secondary and primary levels. They will conduct a bracket of songs each.
We look forward to singing with you on May 7th!
The Aotearoa Teachers’ Choir initiative has been led by Mary Cornish, with support from Chris Moore (MENZA) and Olive Leddy (the New Zealand Choral Federation, Auckland Branch).
