This movement/music workshop will offer participants the opportunity to engage with Māori legend/story using processes involving dance and music. Participants will explore ways of integrating the elements of dance from the NZ Curriculum with Maori dance movements associated with haka, poi and waiata ringa. A range of contemporary NZ music will be used to inspire this dance work.
Presenters
Liz Melchior: Liz is dance lecturer in the School of Education at Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand, where she teaches in early childhood and secondary initial teacher education programmes. An experienced primary school teacher, Liz was a writer for the dance curriculum, providing professional development programmes for teachers implementing dance in the classroom. In recognition of her services to dance in education, Liz was recently awarded a life membership of the New Zealand Dance Subject Association (NZDSA)
Priya Gain: Priya is currently completing a Masters of Education specialising in music and arts education at the University of Waikato. She teaches at Eastern Hutt School as music/movement specialist across the whole school. She has completed ONZA certificated training up to Level 4 in the Aotearoa/New Zealand context. She has a strong commitment to the development of local teaching resources which express the bicultural identity of this country. She has been a regular guest lecturer within the School of Education at Victoria University teaching music modules in the primary learning programme since 2016.
