Workshop 2A: Music Outreach and literacy – Dr Susan West
In this workshop, the principles of Music Outreach will be demonstrated with regard to language literacy through the use of two musical collections that embody these principles. The first encompasses the concept of the ‘lilt’ where poetry is ‘nudged’ into music with simple melodies reminiscent of the lullaby. The second is a complex set of alliterative alphabet poems set to music which have been enthusiastically learned and performed by children as young as 4.
WORKSHOP 2B: Springboards
Where do I start? – how do I build a music programme? This will be a hands on workshop for teachers of 0 to 8 year olds and includes: singing, listening, playing, moving and creating. Lots of practical ideas to take away and use in your centres and schools.
Deb Ferrier-Kerr has been teaching music to children for over 25 years. She works as Kaiarahi for Music Education, she is a Registered Music Teacher -Early Childhood, teachers music in schools and teachers a year 3-4 class at Miramar North School in Wellington.
1:15 – 2:45 Music Outreach and Physical Education (dance)- Dr Susan West
This workshop brings together Music Outreach with singing and moving through a range of song-dances of varying levels of difficulty that can be used as part of physical education. The combination of singing and dancing has a range of health benefits and also helps teachers include more music in the ‘crowded curriculum.’ The songs can be varied to include different ages and skill levels and recorded instrumental tracks are also provided that can accompany the dances as well.
