Musicnet Summary to 16 Aug 2019

Kia ora tātou

This week, 100s of students took part in the Auckland KBB Music Festival and Wellington WEBO Festival. Concert Bands, Orchestras, Jazz Combos, Big Bands, Chamber Orchestras and ensembles in between took to the stage and performed. Earlier this month the NZ Concert Band Festival also took place.

When you look at who is in the ensembles at these festivals, (thanks to the FB feed), I was encouraged to see a number of ensembles that included young musicians, be it Intermediate-age or Year 9s that have only been playing for a few terms. In discussion with one Intermediate teacher a few years ago, the spark for her students to form an orchestra came from a visit from a Secondary School Jazz Combo. If you run an ensemble or choir, how about performing at a nearby Intermediate School? If you are in an Intermediate school, contact one of the local Secondary Schools or youth ensembles to host a performance.
