CHANGES FOR ITINERANT MUSIC TEACHERS

MENZAs looks at how changes to the PPTA Collective Agreement impact ITMs employed by school boards in secondary schools.

One of the significant changes with the most recent PPTA Collective Agreement is the inclusion of pro-rated non-contact time for all teachers (including ITM and RTLB). This means that from the start of 2025, every teacher is entitled to 15 minutes of non-contact time for every hour of contact (teaching) time.

MENZA held an online hui with PPTA in December 2024 around the concerns from ITMs and HODs. The main points of note were:

  • overall FTTE loading, and the possibility of working above 1.0FTTE across more than one school
  • keeping contact hours the same as in 2024 so teaching time did not decrease
  • the expectations of non-contact time.

PPTA and the Ministry of Education have been helpful and supportive as we journey through these changes and iron out any creases along the way.
