Kōkako Award – Celebrating Young Musical Talent

Founded by Chris Sanders in 2024, the Kōkako Award recognises outstanding performance by tamariki in Aotearoa New Zealand. The award is a collaboration between Kiwi Kids Music, NZ Opera and Auckland Philharmonia

This unique award celebrates:

  • Creativity, expression and originality in songwriting and performance
  • Young voices making a difference through their art

The finalists and winners are celebrated at the Aotearoa Children’s Music Awards, which are hosted annually by Suzy Cato ONZM. Finalists submit original “unreleased” songs via simple performance video.  The performer must be 12 years old or under, but doesn’t have to be the songwriter. There is no age cap on the songwriter, so it’s a perfect opportunity for a parent or teacher to have their song performed on a big stage!

The Winning Performer Receives:

  • The song arranged by Auckland Philharmonia
  • A performance of the song with Auckland Philharmonia at Auckland Town Hall and Bruce Mason Theatres
  • $500 further music education voucher
  • Money towards travel expenses (for out-of-Auckland residents)
  • Workshop with industry experts.
  • The spotlight is shone on all finalists through press releases and media from Recorded Music NZ, APRA, NZ On Air, and the Kōkako Award partners.
